  • Police investigate scam reports

    HILLSVILLE — Times are too tough for people to give away their hard-earned dollars to con artists, but Carroll Deputy Kevin Kemp has been investigating many reports of scams in the past few months.
    Calls or mail that claim that people have won prizes should be treated with skepticism, he said. That old saying, “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” applies here.
    Scam artists use every piece of technology available to trick people out of their money or steal their identity, Kemp said.

  • After mild winter, school year should end early

    HILLSVILLE — The mild winter should lead to a long summer for students in Carroll County schools.
    It appears that this year’s trend of minimal frozen precipitation covering the roads could continue, Superintendent Greg Smith said after the school board discussed the topic at its February meeting.
    The warmer than usual winter weather comes after at least three years of missing more than 20 snow days each. Smith hopes the pattern continues to hold.

  • Celebrate birthdays

    Rebekah Morgan celebrated her sixteenth birthday on Sept. 15, 2011. She had celebrations with friends and family at Rio Grande and also at Cabos in Hillsville. 

       She is the daughter of Donnie and Penny Morgan and sister to Elijah and Hannah Morgan of Hillsville.
       Bob Morgan celebrated his “16th” birthday on Feb. 29. He only gets to enjoy a “real” birthday every four years, as he was born in a leap year.

  • Turns three

    Isabella “Izzie” Jo Marshall turned three on Jan. 6. Her birthday was celebrated with a Spongebob Square-pants pool party at the Galax Rec Center. She is the daughter of Joseph and Chrissy Marshall and big sister to Cassidy Marshall.

    Grandparents are Randy and Kim Bell and Dennis and Opie Marshall. Great-grand-parents are M.C. and Irene Bell, the late Verna Liddle, O’Neal and O’Needa Terry, and the late Virgil and Patty Marshall.

    Calynn King celebrated her third birthday Feb. 28 with family and friends.

    She is the daughter of Josh King and Leighann Brinegar. Her grandparents are Marcie and Allen King.

  • Lewis, Gravley to marry

    Sam and Lisa Lewis of Pounding Mill announce the engagement of their daughter, Jillian Blair Lewis, to Michael Gravley, son of Greg and Sharon Gravley of Austinville.

    Lewis is a 2004 graduate of Richlands High School. She graduated from Emory & Henry College with a bachelor’s degree in business and education, and received her master’s in business administration from Radford University. She is a business education teacher and coach at Galax High School.
