  • Charges against police chief dismissed

    BLAND — A charge of using profane language over a public airway was dismissed against Independence Police Chief James Wagoner on Wednesday following a short hearing in Bland County General District Court.
    Wagoner was charged March 15 with allegedly communicating a threat and using profanity to Investigator Doug Carner of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.
    Carner testified that on March 14, he was traveling on Interstate 77 in Bland County when he received a cell phone call from Wagoner.

  • Natural gas safety precautions in place

    HILLSVILLE — While still trying to hook up natural gas to its first customer, Carroll County held a meeting April 25 to impress on citizens the safety measures needed in case something goes wrong with the service in the future.
    Dennis Cole, who managed the gas line project for Carroll County, stressed that if anyone hears a roar of gas escaping the line or smells the odorizer that goes in with the gas to get out of the area and to call emergency officials.

  • Armed robbery suspects arrested

    Two suspects wanted by the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department have been arrested in Washington County.
    The suspects, Adam Franklin Ashby, 40, of Mockingbird Lane in Galax; and Alma K. Prescott, 29, of Radford; were wanted in connection with the alleged armed robbery at a residence in the Oldtown community near Galax.

  • Reward offered in missing person case

    The family of Desia Rae George is offering a $5,000 reward for solid information leading to George being found.

    If a person comes forward with that information, they will get the reward, no questions asked.

  • UPDATED: Boyfriend of missing woman a suspect in N.C. bank robbery

    HILLSVILLE — A suspect in a Monday bank robbery in North Carolina was named as a “person of interest” in a Carroll County police investigation into the April 15 disappearance of Desia Rae George of Fries.
    “We do have a person of interest in the missing person [case] of Desia Rae, one of the last people she had contact with,” Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Donnie Spangler said at a press conference Tuesday morning. “Matthew Steven Jones, age 34. Right now, we’re looking for him.”

  • Deputies shoot armed fugitive in Grayson

    The Grayson County Sheriff's Dept. released the following information on Monday night's incident: "On April 29, at approximately 5:51 p.m., the Grayson County Sheriff's Office received information that a known fugitive by the name of Randy Lee Anders, 32, of 2264 Grassy Creek Road was seen walking on Grassy Creek Road, near Mouth of Wilson. Two on-duty deputies, along with two off-duty deputies responded to the area to search for Anders because of previous threats that Anders had allegedly made against law enforcement.
