    Doesn’t qualify
    I believe in supporting all veterans but sometimes I wonder about the Wounded Warrior Project. I am a disabled veteran myself. I get a check every month and I know for sure a lot of World War II veterans didn’t even file their claim. They were wounded and didn’t even file a claim until they retired. So, I wonder about this Wounded Warrior Project. They all get checks, or are supposed to.

  • Galax man faces drug, traffic charges

    A Galax man was arrested and charged with multiple drug and traffic offenses after a vehicle pursuit on Sept. 14, according to Galax Police Chief Rick Clark.

  • Grayson approves resource officers

    INDEPENDENCE – After months of discussions between the school board and county supervisors, Grayson County Public Schools will receive two new school resource officers for the current school year.
    County officials came to an agreement on how to pay for the new officers, after earlier funding discussions seemed to indicate the school board could not afford to pay the amount of local matching funds that the supervisors required.

  • Drug investigation ongoing after Monday raid

    Police tactical teams wearing body armor and brandishing automatic rifles were on the scene as investigators searched a business, vehicles and at least one residence in Galax.
    The tactical units from Galax and Carroll County were serving drug-related warrants on behalf of the Twin County Drug Taskforce as part of an ongoing investigation, police on the scene reported.

  • Carroll indictments include murder charge

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County grand jury issued 81 indictments while meeting Monday, including formal charges against a 31-year-old Woodlawn man accused of murder and a 23-year-old Woodlawn man accused of an attempted carjacking in Galax.
    Eight indictments were sealed by the court, until warrants could be served.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.
     

  • She's eight

    Riley Madison Coleman celebrated her eighth birthday Aug. 18 at The Galax Smokehouse with family and friends. Her parents are Heather Drennen of Galax and Randy Coleman of China Grove, N.C.

    Her grandparents are Edna and Nelson Coleman, Anna Coltrane and Pat Drennen. She has three brothers, Nathan Bemis and Wyatt and Luke Coleman and one sister, Olivia Coleman.

  • Jones, Ward to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones of Independence announced the engagement of their daughter, Shanna Michelle Jones, to Andrew (Andy) Phillip Ward, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Ward of Galax.

    A wedding is planned for Oct. 5.
