  • Vaughan, 3 others charged in drug conspiracy

    ROANOKE — The investigation into illegal drugs that led to charges against a 53-year-old Galax man also snared three other suspects, two of them from Carroll County.
    Donald Scott Vaughan allegedly left the scene of a drug buy — set up by the Claytor Lake Drug Task Force near Exit 14 off Interstate 77 in Carroll last April — before the purchase could take place.

  • Flea market brings thousands to Hillsville

    HILLSVILLE — This weekend's 44th Annual Labor Day Flea Market & Gun Show will transform Hillsville from a quiet town of 3,000 to one of the largest retail venues in the Southeast.
    The number of vendors of new, used and collectible stuff nearly equals the number of town residents — and attracts an estimated crowd of around half a million shoppers.

  • Labor Day travel likely to increase

    The number of Virginians who will travel this Labor Day holiday is projected to increase 8.8 percent from 2009, AAA Mid-Atlantic said this week.
    Travel growth in the state is expected to lag slightly behind the rest of the country, which will see a nearly 10 percent jump in travel during the long weekend of Thursday-Monday. AAA measures residents who travel at least 50 miles from home.
    In Virginia, AAA anticipates about 929,350 people will take a trip, compared with 853,857 last year.

    HILLSVILLE — Travelers heading to the annual Hillsville Flea Market & Gun Show during Labor Day weekend should be prepared for considerable traffic delays.

  • Boucher opposes gun show checks

    U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Abingdon) said last week that he opposes a federal bill to require background checks for buyers of firearms at gun shows.

  • Driver charged in Grayson fatality

    A 22-year-old man has died as the result of a pickup turning over on him Saturday in Grayson County.
    The driver, a 20-year-old from Crockett in Wythe County, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and DUI.
    The incident occurred at about 7:25 p.m. on Clito Road, east of its intersection with Carsonville Road. At that time, the driver of a 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup, Bradlee Erick Hahn, attempted to back up, but went off the edge of the road to the left and overturned, according to a report by Virginia State Police.

  • Richardsons celebrate birthdays

    Ziley Sue, Jazzy and Zora Grace Richardson celebrated their respective second, fifth and fourth birthdays Aug. 8 with family and friends at a party at the home of their grandparents, Allen and Linda Richardson in Comers Rock.

    The Richardson sisters are the daughters of Glen and Christina Richardson.

  • Pickett, Mabry to be married

    Pastor Jeff and Tammy Pickett announce the engagement of their daughter, Megan Lynn Pickett, to Christopher Reed Mabry on Dec. 24, 2009.
    Chris is the son of B.C. and Teresa Mabry of Barren Springs.

    Megan is the maternal granddaughter of Kenneth and Sue Anders of Galax. She is the maternal great granddaughter of Ruth Rutherford of Galax. She is the paternal granddaughter of the late Charles and Bonnie Pickett.
