    Loye and Wylda Halsey celebrated 65 years of marriage Sept. 7.

    They were married in Independence in the parking lot of The Methodist Church by Preacher Carly McKnight.
    They were sitting in a jeep and the preacher stood by the jeep.

  • Galax intersection reopens Wednesday


     Galax motorists are advised that the intersection of Glendale Road and Stuart Drive near Subway in Galax will re-open Wednesday. 

    The intersection has been closed for several months for construction and improvements. A new traffic pattern allowing two-way traffic will be in effect, Galax police said. 

  • Man charged with breaking into school

    HILLSVILLE — Authorities have charged a 22-year-old man with a break-in at Carroll County Intermediate School around 4:09 a.m. Saturday, according to information from school resource officer Buck Cox.
    A school custodian checking on the school found glass broken out of a back door and found items strewn in the floor on the inside. He called for Cox to investigate.

  • Caudill will serve 3 years for dealing drugs near school

    HILLSVILLE — A 54-year-old man will serve three years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to dealing large amounts of drugs across the street from Woodlawn School.
    Charles Terry Caudill pleaded guilty to five of seven illegal drug-related charges that arose after Carroll County deputies searched his home at 604 Woodlawn Road in February 2009, according to court records.
    Authorities seized nearly six pounds of marijuana, 28 guns and $12,800 in cash after serving a search warrant there.

  • Dennis Ray Cockerham, 58



    Dennis Ray Cockerham, 58, of Lynchburg , Va., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

    He was born in Pulaski, Va., on Oct. 27, 1952. He was a son of the late Stuart H. Cockerham and Doris Denny Cockerham and was the husband of Gayle Rebecca Spencer Cockerham.

  • Another tough loss for Cavs

    MARTINSVILLE –– Making a stand just a few yards from its own end zone and with the game on the line, Martinsville went to its hurry-up defense.

    Carroll County had driven to a second-and-3 at the Martinsville 12-yard line with less than a minute to play when the Bulldogs brought the house and came up with two tackles behind the line of scrimmage, holding on for an 18-14 win in a nondistrict game Friday at Dan Green Stadium.
