  • Fries to host 'Catch the Fun' fishing tournament

    The Town of Fries will host the “Catch the Fun Festival” fishing tournament on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., sponsored by the Fires Fire Department and the Fries Recreation Center.

    Pre-register at Fries Volunteer Fire Department, Fries Town Hall or the Fries Recreation Center

    Prizes will be awarded by length:

    • 1st — $100

    • 2nd — $50

  • Tide downs Gate City to reach soccer final four

    UPDATE: The VHSL has postponed all Group A and Group AA baseball, softball and soccer semifinals and finals due to inclement weather. Semifinals will now be played Saturday and the finals on Sunday. The Group A boys' and girls' soccer semifinals will now be at Salem High School (NOT the Civic Center complex), with the finals to be played at R.U.

     

  • Devil win simple as 1-2-3

    HONAKER –– Grayson County carried a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning of its Group A Division 2 state baseball quarterfinal Tuesday due in large part to a series of outstanding defensive plays. When a few late clunkers allowed Honaker to pull back to within striking distance, it only served to set up one last gem of a play.

    Prevention tool
    Some people object to publication of photographs and crime descriptions in the newspaper. This shows that some people still have some shame with committing crimes. I think that this is a healthy sign and a deterrent to further criminal activity. I hope I never have my picture in the newspaper, but I believe this is an excellent crime prevention tool. People should think first. Crimes are harmful and shameful.

  • Hillsville celebrates Gospel Day

    HILLSVILLE — Organizers of the first-ever Hillsville/Carroll County Gospel Singing Day and classic car cruise in held last Saturday at Jail House Square in Hillsville a success.
    Organizer and Hillsville Town Council member David Young noted that several activities were going on June 1, including the arts and crafts vendor sale at the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter home.

  • Galax park going to the dogs?

    For the past several weeks, Dr. Linda Lastinger has been hard at work with a new project that she hopes will offer a common meeting area for people to relax and socialize in Galax along with their four-legged family members.
    Her idea, as presented at Galax City Council’s May 28 meeting, is to construct a new dog park in the city.

  • Anders charged with officer assault

    INDEPENDENCE — A 32-year-old Grayson County man who was wounded April 29 in a shooting involving Grayson County Sheriff’s deputies faces several charges after his release from Bristol Medical Center on May 30.
    Randy Lee Anders was shot four times after he was found hiding in the basement of a home owned by his neighbor, Richard Spencer.

  • Durnovich, Ventresca engagement announced

    Mr. and Mrs. David Wayne Durnovich of Independence announced the engagement of their daughter, Anna Bryant Durnovich, to Matthew Joseph Ventresca, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Anthony Ventresca, of New Hope, Pa.

    The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wheeler Parsons, of Galax, and John Michael Durnovich and the late Janice Durnovich of Abingdon.
    Anna is a graduate of Grayson County High School and the College of Charleston. She is employed by NAI Geis Realty Group in Philadelphia, Pa.
