  • Help for Virginia's farmer veterans

    Veterans seeking to transition from their life in service to a career in agriculture will have some new resources to help them along the way.

    According to a recent announcement, the Virginia chapter of the Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC), a national organization, launched earlier this year alongside West Virginia and New York chapters, and have already begun developing partnerships and establishing a network for their cause.

    HILLSVILLE – Three votes were all that separated the winner and runner-up for the Fancy Gap District school board seat in Carroll County in Tuesday’s election.

    Candidate Phillip Berrier, who lost to incumbent Joey Haynes 501-498, said he plans to ask for a recount of ballots.

  • Revels, Sage win in Grayson

    Staff Reports

    Two new members will join the board of supervisors and school board in Grayson County, both representing the Wilson District, after wins in Tuesday’s election.

    Both ran for seats soon to be vacated by incumbent candidates who decided not to seek re-election.

    In the race for Wilson District supervisor, Rex Revels, a Republican, received 948 votes (77 percent), beating Democratic opponent Gesche Morley, who received 281 votes (23 percent.)

  • Northam elected governor

    Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam will be Virginia’s next governor after fending off a challenge from Republican Ed Gillespie that embraced the tactics of President Donald Trump in the final weeks of the campaign.

    In the Twin Counties, Gillespie easily carried Galax, Carroll and Grayson precincts, with wins ranging from 69 to 77 percent. Other Republicans on the ticket also took the three localities, bucking the state’s gradual shift to the left.

  • Campbell, O'Quinn return to House of Delegates

    Republicans retained control of the Virginia House of Delegates after an election night that saw Democrats unseat Republicans and flip seats that had been held by GOP incumbents who didn’t seek re-election.

    After election officials took a closer look at four close contests, the result was a 51-49 Republican majority, beginning in January 2018. Now, Republicans, control 66 of the House’s 100 seats.

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County’s newly formed gardening club recently entered the student crop competition at the State Fair of Virginia and won several awards.

    The Grateful Dirt Diggers 4-H Gardening Club formed a month ago with students from Hillsville Elementary and Carroll County Middle School.
