  • School budget talk raises questions for Galax citizen

    A Jan. 12 public hearing regarding an amendment to the Galax school budget drew no speakers, though remarks were made later in the meeting by a citizen.

    Council member Sharon Plichta was absent from the Galax City Council meeting, while new specially-appointed council member Bill Davis Jr. was present for his first meeting.

  • Republican primary deadline is Jan. 26

    HILLSVILLE – Anyone planning to seek public office in Carroll County and run in the Republican preferential primary is reminded that the deadline to file is today, Monday, at noon.

    The Carroll County Republican Party will select its slate of candidates to run in the Nov. 3 general election during the primary to be held on May 16.

  • Boucher: first step in ending gridlock

    Rick Boucher, former Democratic congressman from Virginia’s 9th District, is co-chair of the Virginia Commission on Integrity and Public Confidence in State Government, appointed by Gov. Terry McAuliffe. In Congress, he represented the Twin Counties and Southwest Virginia for more than two decades.

    The gerrymandering of state legislative and congressional districts is a bipartisan offense. Members of the Virginia Commission on Integrity and Public Confidence in State Government are proposing a bipartisan solution.

  • Firefighters battle blaze inside Magnolia factory in Hillsville

    HILLSVILLE - Several fire departments worked to extinguish a fire at the Magnolia Manufacturing Company in Hillsville on Saturday, when an unknown cause sparked a fire in two industrial units inside one of the factory's filter houses.

    According to a report from Hillsville Assistant Fire Chief Mike Musser, firefighters were called to Magnolia around 7:30 p.m. to reports of a fire inside the factory.

    Upon arrival, firefighters were told that the fire was in a filter house — a component of the factory.

  • Holdaway: fix Grayson attendance policy now

    INDEPENDENCE – Employees are rewarded for time off, while students and parents are punished for excused days, according to one school board member in Grayson County.

    Vice Chairman Shannon Holdaway asked a simple question during this month’s regular board meeting that turned into quite a debate between himself and the administration.

  • The Dream That Woke a Nation

    Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., born in poverty in Atlanta and killed by an assassin’s bullet in Memphis at age 39, spent his life traveling through America as a Baptist preacher and Civil Rights activist who sought justice and racial equality for African-Americans.

    His “I Have a Dream” speech established him as one of the greatest orators in American history, and his work shed a light that is still a beacon today.

  • Campbell supports bill to keep training center open

    A bill introduced in the 2015 General Assembly seeks to keep open the Southwest Virginia Training Center in Hillsville and Southeastern Virginia Training Center in Chesapeake for their disabled residents.

    House Bill 1614 was offered Jan. 14 by delegates Jeff Campbell, James Leftwich, Israel O’Quinn and Todd Pillion; and state senators Bill Carrico and Ben Chafin.

  • Police report multiple wrecks in Galax

    The Galax Police Department responded to three separate vehicle crashes Tuesday, two of which occurred on Glendale Road within minutes of one another, and the third involving a civilian vehicle and a police car on Meadow Street.

    The first accident was Tuesday at about 2:13 p.m. According to a police report shared by Capt. James Cox, a 2004 Ford Focus operated by Brook Williams, 23, of Galax, was traveling west on Glendale Road. The vehicle left the left side of the road, struck a ditch and overturned, coming to rest against a tree across from Monta Vista Cemetery.

    Scarlett Renee Dalton turned five years old Dec. 20, 2014. She had a “Frozen” theme party with family. She is the daughter of Patrick Dalton and Jessica Fine.

    She has an older sister, Savannah. Her grandparents are Ronnie and Cathy Dalton and Erania Fine. Her great-grandparents are James and Tina Nester.
