  • Carroll PSA hears concerns, updates on utility projects

    HILLSVILLE — A Commonwealth Road resident brought concerns about fire protection and insurance to the Carroll County Public Service Authority’s Aug. 11 meeting.

    The PSA also received updates on various utility projects and heard a complaint about how it handled a news release about winning an appeal in a dispute over federal funding used for a water project.

    J.D. Smith explained that he had been a Carroll County resident since 2002, living on Commonwealth Road in the Woodlawn area.

  • Galax sets hearing on proposed school site

    The Galax School Board on Aug. 12 voted to approve entering into a contract to purchase property on Kipling Lane, the proposed site for building a new elementary school.

    The board has spent several months planning the project and discussing the property purchase with Galax City Council and the city’s planning commission.

  • Bassett, Macy to appear on C-SPAN2 Sunday

    John Bassett, chairman of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company in Galax, and author Beth Macy will appear on C-SPAN2 this Sunday night, Aug. 17, to discuss Macy’s book, “Factory Man.”

    The 90-minute show is part of the C-SPAN2 series “Booknotes” and will run from 10-11:30 p.m.

    The network sent cameras last week to a book discussion held at St Johns Episcopal Church in Roanoke, which featured Macy and Bassett, the book’s main subject. About 300 people attended the event.

  • Prisoner recaptured after escape attempt

    HILLSVILLE - A Hillsville man received additional charges after fleeing police custody while being served a warrant at the Carroll County Governmental Complex on Aug. 8.

    Arless Lynn Dalton Jr., 34, was being served a warrant for a felony shoplifting charge on Friday, when he ducked under a garage door at the sheriff’s office in an attempt to flee from custody, according to Hillsville Interim Chief Wesley Yonce.

  • Grayson fire causes heat, smoke damage

    The Galax Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 5:16 a.m. Saturday morning, located at 408 Mockingbird Lane in the Oldtown section of Grayson County, according to a fire department press release.

    The fire was contained to the living room area, but the home suffered extensive smoke and heat damage. Naomi McKinney, a resident of the home, stated that she had left a candle burning and that it apparently had started the fire. The home is owned by Conley Kyle of Galax.

    Cassidy “Cassie” Lynne Marshall turned three on July 23.  Her birthday was celebrated with a Merida river party. She is the daughter of Joseph and Chrissy Marshall. She is younger sister of Izzie, and older sister to Briley Marshall.

    Her grandparents are Randy and Kim Bell and Dennis and Opie Marshall. Her great-grandparents are M.C. and Irene Bell, the late Verna Liddle, O’Neal and O’Needa Terry, the late Virgil and Patty Marshall.

    Blair Marie Dalton celebrated her first birthday July 3. She is the daughter of Jason and Stephanie Dalton.

    Her grandparents are Ricky and Cissy Dalton of Fancy Gap, Ernestine and Robert Clark of Fairview and Danilo and Iris Martinez of Cypress, Texas. Her great-grandparents are Ralph and Modena Dalton of Woodlawn and Annabelle Horton of Fancy Gap. She has two sisters, Jenna and Kristen Dalton.

    Lindsay Erin Myers and Roger Dale Stone were married May 3, 2014, at Graystone Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, Tenn.
    Michael Thomas was the officiating minister.
    Maid of honor was Kelly Myers, sister of the bride. Matron of honor was Gayle Higgs, sister of the bride.
    Bridesmaids were Laura Benner, Katie Helms, Mandi Meek and Amy Cole.
    Groomsmen were Fred Stone, father of the groom; Garrett Cole, brother‑in‑law of the groom; and Jonathan Cole, Kevin Kosier, Kent Kosier and Justin Black.
    Ring bearer was Dylan Benner.
