  • 3 charged after Galax break-in, assault

    Staff Reports

    Three people face an array of charges that include assault, burglary, firearms violations and possession of untaxed whiskey following an altercation on Sunday in Galax. A fourth man is being sought by police.

    According to a Galax Police Department report, officers were called to respond to a fight in progress at a residence on Robinson Street on Dec. 27.

  • Grayson thanks departing school board members

    INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County School Board concluded its 2015 business at the Dec. 14 meeting, where present members of the school board and new Schools Superintendent Kelly Wilmore thanked departing members for their service.

    “I am overpowered by the dedication of service from the people on this board,” said School Board Chair Larry Bartlett, who is stepping down Dec. 31. “I am appreciative of the friendships, and their willingness to work with [each other], and their dedication to our kids.”

  • Friends helping Shupe stand tall

    E.W. Shupe, known affectionately as both “Dub” and “E.W.” to his friends, came home from work one Friday in 2003, feeling sick and feverish. He had just turned 21 and had a four-month-old daughter.

    A week later, the Fries resident had bounced from Twin County Regional Hospital to the New River Valley Medical Center outside Radford and wound up in Roanoke, where he spent time in intensive care while physicians worked to figure out what was wrong with him.

  • Christmas Eve wreck traps two

    INDEPENDENCE — The Independence Volunteer Fire Department and several other first responder agencies reported for duty on Christmas Eve, when a car accident on Wilson Highway (U.S. 58) left the driver and passenger trapped by the wreckage.

  • I-77 crash involves two cars, police vehicle

    Multiple injuries were the result of an accident on Interstate 77 in Carroll County on Christmas Day. The accident involved a previously stopped vehicle and a Virginia State Police vehicle and occurred at mile marker 11.3 in the southbound lane.

    According to Sgt. Michael Musser with the Virginia State Police, the male driver of a 2004 GMC Yukon was pulled over on the shoulder of I-77 having an argument with an adult female passenger. Police officers with both the Virginia State Police and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to handle the matter.

  • Couple to celebrate anniversary today

    D. Roger and Norma Jean Rosenbaum Carico of Galax will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 23.

    He retired from Volvo Truck Corporation in Dublin. She is a dedicated wife and homemaker. They have two daughters and a son-in-law, Tina Carico of Galax and Lisa Carico Burnett and Stephen Burnett of Knoxville, Tenn. Their two grandchildren are Abigail and Aaron Burnett of Knoxville.
    The couple will be honored and celebrated with a party given by their family.

  • Turns two

    Briley McKinley Marshall turned two on Dec. 10. His birthday was celebrated with a Paw Patrol party with friends and family.

    He is the son of Joseph and Chrissy Marshall. His big sisters are Izzie and Cassie Marshall. His grandparents are Randy and Kim Bell and Dennis and Opie Marshall. His great-grandparents are M.C. and Irene Bell, the late Verna Liddle, O’Neal and O’Needa Terry, and the late Virgil and Patty Marshall.
