INDEPENDENCE — Last year, the Independence VFW and Ladies Auxiliary lent a helping hand to Santa and to their neighbors by purchasing and distributing toys for more than 400 local families at Christmas.
This year, Santa will have even more helpers.
Members of the Independence Police Department, Independence Volunteer Fire Department and town council have teamed up to form “Independence Cares,” an organization that will hold a coat and toy drive for local children during the Christmas season.
HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County Circuit Court recently released these unsealed indictments.
An indictment is not a finding of guilt, merely a formal criminal charge.
Direct indictments are routinely sealed until the person named can be served with warrants.
Those named in the unsealed indictments include:
• Matthew Charles Hall - possession of methamphetamine, a schedule II drug
• Donald Robert Burcham - possession of meth
• Robert Shane Gallimore - possession of meth
Oakland Elementary School’s kindergarten classes are raising funds to send 75 gift stockings to an adopted soldier’s unit this Christmas.
Operation “Santa Soldier” Stockings not only involves students in putting together gifts for American soldiers for the holidays, but also establishes a bond between the adopted unit and students through a pen pal program. Students will write to the soldiers and hear back about their travels overseas.
HILLSVILLE –– Times were, Carroll County slugged it out all season only to match up against a River Ridge District powerhouse in the playoffs. This year, it’s all kind of backwards.
The Cavaliers concluded their first regular season as a member of that River Ridge and will move on to a postseason devoid of Cave Spring and Hidden Valley. Carroll solidified its No. 5 standing in the eight-team district with a 25-17, 25-21, 25-23 senior night win over 6A Patrick Henry and will open Conference 24 tournament play Monday against an opponent to be determined.
ROANOKE –– Patrick Henry scored touchdowns on three of its first six plays, rolled up a 35-0 lead after one quarter and zoomed past Carroll County 70-22 in a River Ridge District game Friday at Merrill Gainer Stadium.
The Group 6A Patriots remained in a tie for first place in the RRD standings at 7-2 while Carroll County dropped to 1-8.
HILLSVILLE –– Back in mid-September, Galax cross country runner Cliff Conley turned in a time of 16 minutes, 38 seconds on the 3.1-mile Southwestern Virginia Training Center course. It was a very solid time, but Conley crossed the finish line more than a half-minute behind Matthew Farmer of Rural Retreat.
Since that race, Conley has edged closer to and finally broken the school record for a 5-kilometer race. He did so again on Wednesday.
INDEPENDENCE – Back-to-back trips to the Twin Counties provided similar results for the Narrows football team after another lopsided loss Friday night – this time a 55-22 drubbing by Grayson County at Bill Strong Field.
The Blue Devils (5-4 overall, 2-2 MED) guaranteed themselves to finish at or above .500 for the regular season after running over traditional MED bottom-feeder Narrows (3-6, 1-3) in front of their home crowd.
