  • Yonce named interim police chief

    HILLSVILLE — After two hours of deliberation during a closed session on July 14, members of the Hillsville Town Council settled on a plan of action to select a new police chief for the Hillsville Police Department.

    After coming out of closed session, a motion was made to advertise for the spot left vacant by former chief Greg Bolen, who tendered his resignation on June 30.

  • Carroll wins appeal, will get back federal funds

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County Public Service Authority has won its appeal of a take-back of $266,167.20 that federal officials initially said had been improperly used for a utility project.

    PSA Chairman Sam Dickson was notified that a federal appeals hearing officer has reversed the USDA-Rural Development decision that said the PSA improperly used funds allocated in the Fancy Gap sewer project for construction of the Joy Ranch Road sewer line extension.

    As a result, the PSA will receive all of the disputed money back in a refund from USDA-RD.

  • Porters celebrate 60th anniversary

    Ray and Mabel (Cox) Porter of Galax celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 19.
    They enjoyed their special day by visiting York, S.C., where they were wed.
    Ray is retired from ABF and Mabel is retired from Sears.

    The Porters’ two children are Roger Porter and his wife Laurie, and Randy Porter, all of Galax. They have two grandchildren, Kaitlin and Michael.
    They enjoy traveling, motorcycles and days full of sunshine. They are members of First United Methodist Church in Galax and are active members of the Galax Car Club.

  • Catron, Felts to marry

    Brad and Debra Catron of Gainesville, Ga., announced the engagement of their daughter, Lauryn Catron, to Matthew Felts, son of Jerry and Jean Felts of Galax.
    The couple met on a mission trip in 2007.

    The bride-elect is a 2009 graduate of Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, Ga., and obtained an associate’s degree in Media Studies from North Georgia College and University, Gainesville.  She works and resides in Raleigh, N.C.

    Kevin T. and Tammy B. Crouse announce their wedding that took place May 31 at Roaring Gap Church in Roaring Gap, N.C.
    A reception followed, at the church.

    The bride is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Charlie Bennett of Ennice, N.C.
    The groom is the son of Steve and Dixie Y. Varanko of Ennice, N.C., and the grandson of the late Lila Reynolds Young of Galax.
    Both are graduates of Alleghany High School, Sparta, N.C.
    The couple now resides in Claremont, N.C.

  • Update: Vanguard announces plans to bring factory to Carroll County

    HILLSVLLE — Vanguard Furniture will open a manufacturing plant for upholstered furniture in Carroll County in August, which could eventually create more than 200 new jobs.

    Carroll officials announced plans Tuesday for Vanguard’s plant that will occupy the former Parkdale Building at the Carroll County Industrial Park.

    Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in a news release that the Hickory, N.C.-based Vanguard Furniture will invest $550,000 to establish its first Virginia household furniture upholstery production operation in Carroll.

  • Man reported missing in Carroll County

    Update: Sheriff J. B. Gardner has confirmed by phone with Shaine Scott Eckrote's mother that she knows where her son is and that he is okay. "Mrs. Barkley wanted to thank everyone who was involved in locating her son," the Sheriff said in an email to The Gazette.

    The Carroll County Sheriff's Office is investigating the disappearance of 20 year old Shaine Scott Eckrote of Patrick County, after members of his family reported him missing from the Kanawha Valley Arena area, in Dugspur.    

  • Vanguard announces 200 jobs in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE — Vanguard Furniture on Tuesday morning announced the opening of a new upholstery factory in Carroll County.

    A news release from Vanguard said operations will begin in August and the company anticipates more than 200 people will be employed when the operation in the Carroll County Industrial Park is fully functional.
