    Wasted effort
    Thank you, Grayson supervisors, for wasting my money on [bounties for] coyotes. I will do everything in my power the next election to make sure you are not reelected for voting to kill the coyotes.
    Editor’s note: So you’ll be informed come election time: the increase in the coyote bounty fund, like the bounty itself, was decided by a 3-2 vote. Supervisors Glen Rosenbaum, David Sexton and John Brewer voted for it, and Supervisors Kenneth Belton and Brenda Sutherland voted against it.

  • Fire on Kenbrook leaves no one harmed

    A fire on Kenwood Drive in Galax Tuesday night left some personal property damage but nobody injured, according to Galax Assistant Fire Chief Mark Burnett.

     

    According to Burnett, the firefighters were sent out at 7:43 p.m. When they arrived, they found approximately 10 people in the yard, only one of whom spoke English.

  • Osbornes to be honored for 50th anniversary

    Celebration to be held Saturday at Elk Creek Rescue Squad Building.

    John and Susan Osborne will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Jan. 31 at Elk Creek Rescue Squad Building, 2-5 p.m.
    John Delp and Susan Osborne were married Jan. 29, 1965 at Bridle Creek United Methodist Church.
    In that year, Lyndon B. Johnson was president, a gallon of gas cost 31 cents, “Wooly Bully” was in the top 10 on the music charts, the number one TV show was “Bonanza,” and “The Sound of Music” premiered.

  • Robinson, Turner engagement announced

    Mr. and Mrs. Todd Davis along with Mr. and Mrs. David Herrmann announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Turner, to Dustin Robinson of Gina Robinson.

    A June wedding is planned.

    Isabella “Izzie” Jo Marshall turned age 6 on Jan. 6. Her birthday was celebrated with a Frozen bowling party with friends and family.

    She is the daughter of Joseph and Chrissy Marshall. She is the big sister to Cassie and Briley Marshall. Her grandparents are Randy and Kim Bell and Dennis and Opie Marshall. Her great-grandparents are M.C. and Irene Bell, the late Verna Liddle, O’Neal and O’Needa Terry, and the late Virgil and Patty Marshall.

  • Tate, Cooke marry at facility where they worked, met

    Joey Tate and Becky Cooke were united in marriage Dec. 1, 2014.

    The couple met two years ago while working at Golden Living Center – Blue Ridge in Galax.
    They decided to have their wedding among friends and residents at the living center.
    The Rev. Bob Adams, a volunteer, performed the ceremony in the dining room.
    Music was provided by activity director Martha Norman.
    A reception followed.
    Attendees enjoyed the afternoon of celebration with Mr. and Mrs. Tate.
    Tate works as housekeeping supervisor.

  • School reform plan targets tests, funding

    Virginia school superintendents recently announced a comprehensive plan for education reform, and it gets a passing grade from local school chiefs.

    The plan sets new expectations for public schools, as well as what is expected of the governor, the General Assembly and the State Board of Education; parents, students and educators; businesses and local governments; and the public.

  • Elk Creek collision sends two to hospital

    ELK CREEK — A two-vehicle Grayson County crash sent two to the hospital on Jan. 28.

    The 12:30 p.m. Elk Creek Parkway (U.S. 21) wreck occurred when a 2014 Kia Soul driven by Ronald K. Garrett, 69, of Crockett, attempted to pass a 1977 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Wanda Galyean Wampler, 76, of Galax, according to a report by Virginia State Police Trooper D.A. Phipps.

  • HVFD receives grant to replace fire truck

    HILLSVILLE — The Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department received a $3,500 grant from Walmart to assist in the replacement of a fire truck lost to a crash and the implementation of a new honor guard.

    Galax Walmart manager Todd Taylor and Community Involvement Coordinator Pam Chamberlain presented the check to Fire Chief Donnie Spangler on Jan. 9.
