  • Maroon Tide girls bounce back, top Wave

    Galax rebounded from a 15-run loss the day before and won for the second time in the week, getting off to a hot start and defeating Narrows 10-0 in six innings in a Mountain Empire District game Friday at Mountain View Park.

    Leading 3-0 after two innings, the Maroon Tide (3-9 overall, 2-2 MED) added four runs in the third to lead 7-0. Taylor Cummings doubled to drive in a pair of runs and later scored on an error, and Brittany Byrd’s base hit capped the rally by knocking in Nikki Boyles.

  • Blue Devils deep-six Maroon Tide

    INDEPENDENCE –– For Grayson County Thursday it was six of one, a half-dozen of the other. 

    The Blue Devils put six runs on the board in the first inning and a half-dozen more in the second, and coasted to a 16-1 five-inning win over Galax in a Mountain Empire District game Thursday.

    Grayson County retained firm control of the top spot in the MED by moving to 3-0 in the league, 8-2 overall. Galax dipped to 2-9 overall, 1-2 MED.

  • Bobbitt is 'most wanted'

     

     

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County deputies are searching for a 48-year-old Lambsburg man as their latest "most wanted."

    Tulsa Wayne Bobbitt is wanted for violation of probation and failure to appear in court on drug related as well as habitual offender charges.

We mistakenly reported that one of the two bread stores was still open in Galax. After publication, we discovered that both bread stores, Merita and Flowers Bakery, have now moved out of the city.   • Survey points out healthcare needs

    Judging by the results of Twin County Regional Hospital’s recent community survey, steps are being made in the right direction with the facility since the merger with Duke LifePoint.
    Late last year, approximately 308 people were randomly selected to weigh in on what they loved and hated about the healthcare options available in this region.
    TCRH set the bar in several categories, scoring high in categories such as general practice, convenience, positive staff attitudes and outpatient care.

  • TCRH reviews community survey

    As it enters its 40th year, Twin County Regional Hospital still has a few things to learn, and has turned to the community to advise it about where it stands in terms of services, facilities and care.
    At a joint meeting of TCRH community advisory groups on April 18, Hospital CEO Jon Applebaum presented an overview of the results of the 2012 Community Perception Survey. Conducted last November.

  • Should landfill money fund unrelated projects?

    HILLSVILLE — Only one member of the regional Solid Waste Authority board voted against including funds for economic development measures in the landfill’s 2014 budget.
    Josh Hendrick, Carroll supervisor and representative on the authority, questioned the practice of the SWA financially supporting efforts of the Wired Road, the regional broadband project.
    The issue came up Friday during the authority’s regular meeting. This is the second time in two months that discussion of the Wired Road funding came up.

  • Grayson facing $1.4M shortfall

    INDEPENDENCE – Grayson County begins its months-long process of balancing its budget with an initial shortfall of $1.4 million.
    County Administrator Jonathan Sweet presented the supervisors with the first budget snapshot during a work session on April 24.
    Sweet said projected revenues for fiscal year 2014 are $16.86 million, a .03 percent increase ($53,277) over last year’s adjusted revenues.
