  • Carroll, Mt. Airy to finally meet on football field

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County High School and Mount Airy Senior High have been sitting just 21 miles apart for more than 40 years without their varsity football players ever having stood across the field from one another.

    That will change this week.

    A rivalry that never was but should have been will finally kick off Friday when the Granite Bears chug up Fancy Gap Mountain for a nondistrict game at Tommy Thompson Field.

  • Cavs take Tide in three

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County used a 10-1 run in the first set and a 15-3 tear in the third to roll to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-8 win over Galax in a nondistrict match Monday night.

    “We played well defensively,” Cavalier coach Cindy Edwards said after her team improved to 2-1 on the year. “And we keep talking about somebody stepping up and wanting to be the one to put the ball down, and I see us getting better doing that.”

  • Tate enters Carroll school board race

    LAUREL FORK — A long-time school system volunteer from Laurel Fork wants to ensure students get a quality education by serving on the Carroll County School Board.
    Janet Hylton Tate has joined the race to be the Laurel Fork school board representative, competing with Sanford “Sandy” Hendrick for the open seat.
    Tate has experience serving on several educational committees, including the kindergarten committee, the textbook screening committee, school division construction committee.

  • Oracle trial moved to November

    INDEPENDENCE — The Oracle Institute’s religious discrimination case against Grayson County has been rescheduled again, this time to Nov. 16-17.
    The trial originally was set for May, then moved to September.
    The suit alleges that the Grayson County Board of Supervisors violated Oracle Institute President Laura George’s rights to freedom of religion, freedom of speech and equal protection of the law in violation of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) and the U.S. and Virginia constitutions.

  • Turns 90

    Dorothy Quesinberry of Fancy Gap celebrated her 90th birthday Aug. 8.

    She was honored with a cake and a cookout by her children and grandchildren. She also had a surprise visit by her three sisters and brother.

  • Surratt, Hill to be married

    Mr. and Mrs. Foy Johnny Surratt of Hillsville announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Shae Surratt, to Daniel Morgan Hill.
    Hill is the son of Danny and Joyce Hill of Galax.

    He is a 2004 graduate of Carroll County High School and is a teacher at Radford High School.
    Surratt is a 2004 graduate of Carroll County High School and is a hair stylist at Unique Full Service Salon in Radford.
    An October wedding is planned at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.

  • Shepard, Harris to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Danny K. Shepard of Tazewell announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Danielle Shepard, to Van Harris, son of Frances and Grover Harris of Speedwell.
    Shepard graduated from Bluefield College with a bachelor of arts degree. She is employed as a physical therapy assistant at Williams Physical Therapy in Galax.

    Harris received a bachelor of arts degree in teaching from Bluefield College. He is employed with the Grayson County School system.
    An October wedding is planned and the couple will reside in Wytheville.

  • Nichols, Adams marry

    Joseph Edward Adams and Holly Beth Nichols were joined in marriage Aug. 6 by the Rev. Sam Bartlett in a ceremony attended by son Cobey and immediate family.
    The ceremony took place in the rock gazebo overlooking the duck pond on the Virginia Tech campus.

    Adams is the son of Dick and Penny Adams of Galax.
    Nichols is the daughter of Gary and Kathy Nichols of Independence.
    The couple spent their honeymoon in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
