  • Pioneers rally again in MED

    INDEPENDENCE –– Fort Chiswell’s approach at the plate in winning the Mountain Empire District baseball tournament was a proven one. That much is known because it was the same approach Grayson County employed to dominate the district for years – hitting with two strikes.

    Clutch hitting carried the Pioneers for the second straight day, this time to a 5-3 win over the season champion Blue Devils in the title game Thursday.

  • Devils, Stark reach regionals

     INDEPENDENCE –– Galax’s Carahline Stark won the Mountain Empire District girls’ tennis singles championship and Grayson County’s Laura Shearin and Lucy Phipps claimed the doubles title in the MED tournament recently at Grayson County High School.

    Stark defeated Abby Taylor of Narrows 6-0, 6-1 and Anna Turnmire of Grayson County blanked Fort Chiswell’s Courtney Robb 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. Stark downed Turnmire 6-1, 6-1 for the singles crown.

  • Devils win MED title; Cavaliers get past Tazewell

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County added the Mountain Empire District tournament softball championship to its regular season title, whipping Fort Chiswell 10-0 in five innings Thursday at the Grayson County Rec. Park.

    Sarah Eller got it done at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle for Grayson County (13-8), which will host a Region C Division 2 quarterfinal game Tuesday. Eller limited the Pioneers (7-11) to two hits in five innings, striking out 10 and walking none.

  • Woman charged in murder-for-hire plot


    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Investigators on May 27 arrested Candi Freeman Carico, 37, of 233 Sandalwood Lane on charges of criminal solicitation to commit murder.

    Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan said that his office received information about an alleged plot to kill Carico’s estranged husband, Tim Carico.

    The findings of the investigation were presented to a magistrate in a probable cause hearing and a warrant was issued.
