  • Devils welcome Graham to neighborhood

    INDEPENDENCE –– If the Division 2 Western Section playoffs started this week, top-seeded Grayson County would open the postseason with a home game against No. 16 Graham.

    Of course the playoffs don’t start tonight. But it’ll soon be known what would happen if they did.

    The G-Men and the Blue Devils kick off the district portion of schedules tonight at Bill Strong Field as one of the more storied football programs in Southwest Virginia makes its Mountain Empire District debut.

    HOT SPRINGS –– Galax handled harsh conditions and a devilish couple of pin placements to win its third straight Region C golf championship Monday at The Homestead’s Lower Cascades course.

    Dealing with a wind-chill factor in the mid-20s and a hole location on No. 17 that would be right at home on any miniature golf layout, the Maroon Tide soldiered through with a four-man total of 322 to earn its fourth straight team berth in next week’s Group A state tournament.

  • Galax PD to create Hispanic outreach

    A $140,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice will allow the Galax Police Department to hire a bilingual police officer and create an outreach to the Hispanic population in Galax.
    This Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS) grant will provide funding for an entry-level position, including salary and benefits and training, if needed, of a newly-hired, or rehired, full-time officer position. The Galax Police Department will be required to fund the position for 12 months in the fourth year.

  • Galax Fire Department to hold parade Oct. 11

    The Galax Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Fire Prevention Week parade on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Galax.
    The fire station will have an open house that night, as well.

  • Maroon Tide runners shine in Charlotte

     CHARLOTTE, N.C. –– Despite missing several runners due to SAT testing, Galax still enjoyed its most successful trip ever to the prestigious Wendy’s Cross Country Classic at McAlpine Park.

    The Maroon Tide girls placed eighth and Galax’s boys were 12th in an event that drew 31 teams Saturday, with two Tide runners earning medalist honors.
