  • Motorcycle rider dies in Carroll crash

    HILLSVILLE – A Radford man was killed in a motorcycle accident in Carroll County over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

    According to a news release from the Virginia State Police, there were six traffic fatalities over the weekend and four of those were motorcycle crashes.

    State Trooper J.D. Delp reported that authorities were dispatched to an accident at 4492 Danville Pike (U.S. 58) at 12:10 p.m. on May 27. The accident occurred at the intersection of Danville Pike and Route 673 (Pilgrims Trail), about three miles outside the Town of Hillsville.

    The life of Stanley Meador, this year’s Galax High School commencement speaker, is told in spare sentences and a purely factual delivery, partly because, like most Twin County natives, he’s modest about himself – and partly because some of it’s classified.

    The Galax native is an FBI agent who is currently supervisory senior resident agent of the Wilmington Resident Agency out of the Charlotte Division. The Wilmington office covers eight surrounding counties.

  • Galax bus service is now Mountain Lynx

    Mountain Lynx Transit is the new name for the local public transportation program that serves residents of Galax and the Carroll and Grayson County communities, along with other towns and counties in Virginia’s Planning District Three.

    For more than three decades, local public transportation services have been provided by District Three Governmental Cooperative in cooperation with local governments. Traditionally, these transit buses are white with blue trim, and bear the District Three markings on the side.

  • Couple celebrates 50th anniversary

    The Rev. Jackie and Ann Reeves celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary April 15, 2017, at Galax Country Club with a host of family and friends.

    James Holden Brewer turned age 2 on April 15. He is the son of Jamie and Summer Brewer. He has a sister, Caitlynn Brewer, and a brother, Caleb McMillan.

    His grandparents are Glenda and Doug Forester and the late Jimmy Brewer, and Mary and Sonny Newman, all of Galax.

  • Woman, dog rescued from home that flooded

    FRIES — Rescue teams responded to a residence during the May 24 storm, to assist a couple who were trapped in their home by rising water.

    According to a report from Fries Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief Chad Stanley, rescuers were dispatched at approximately 10:50 p.m. to a residence at 3774 Ivanhoe Road, where a man, a woman and a small dog were trapped inside the structure with water rising.

  • Maroon Tide eliminated with 1-0 loss to Eagles

    RINER –– Abby Wilson’s one-out double in the bottom of the first produced the game’s only run as Galax fell to Auburn 1-0 in the Region 1A West softball semifinals Monday.

    The loss ends Galax’s season at 15-7 while the Eagles advance to the region semifinals today (Wednesday) against Patrick Henry-Glade Spring.

    With one out in the bottom of the first, Jaylin Shepherd drew a walk and stole second, from where she scored on Wilson’s lined double to center.
