  • Blue Devils knock off Warriors

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County avenged its only loss of the year and improved to 4-1 on the season Monday night, taking a two-set lead and holding off Chilhowie 25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16 in a nondistrict match.

    The Blue Devils had lost in four games to the Warriors last week, one day after knocking off Carroll County.

  • Galax could make water connections mandatory

    The City of Galax is considering adoption of a mandatory water connection ordinance, similar to the mandatory sewer ordinance already in place.
    The city has a mandatory connection ordinance for sewer if a home is within 350 feet of a public sewer line. However, there is no such requirement for water connections.

  • Suspect briefly slips out of police custody


    INDEPENDENCE — A Fredericksburg man faces several charges, including felony escape, following an incident in Independence on Sunday.
    Chief Deputy Mike Hash said the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a suspicious person sitting in a car on the parking lot of Grayson Inn and Suites.
    Deputy Alan Graham and Sgt. Arnold Peters were dispatched to the scene, where they found the man in a 2010 Hyundai reported stolen in Spotsylvania County.

  • Save Green Expo set for Saturday

    A gathering of environmentally-oriented businesses and non-profits will provide information and technology to attendees of the second annual “Save Green Expo” at Crossroads Institute in Galax on Sept. 17, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
    The free event is to educate local residents on ways to save money and help the environment, through the theme, “Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle.”
    It is an opportunity for those interested in environmental issues, green technology and green jobs to see what is available within the region.

  • Tractor-trailer destroyed by fire

    A tractor-trailer was practically unrecognizable after catching fire at Interstate 77's Exit 19 Tuesday after 2 p.m.

    Hillsville Fire, Carroll Fire-Rescue, Barren Springs Fire and Laurel Rescue Squad responded to the scene.

    Though there was a report of a fuel tank exploding, Hillsville Fire Department's David Young said that was actually a tire.
