    Should Twin County Regional Hospital decide to align itself with a larger hospital system, it appears there will be no lack of interested parties.
    The Galax hospital is using a national consulting firm, Stroudwater Associates, to determine how it can best serve the community — either by remaining independent or aligning with a system.

  • Grayson grand jury issues indictments

    INDEPENDENCE — Jason Michael Lambert, 27, of Galax, was indicted on seven charges last Friday by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury, meeting at the Grayson County Courthouse.
    An indictment indicates that a grand jury found sufficient evidence for a case to go to trial, and does not indicate guilt. All of those indicted are innocent until proven guilty.

  • Town council to hold public hearing

    INDEPENDENCE — Town council has scheduled a public hearing for May 10 to take comments from citizens on the 2011-2012 budget.
    The hearing is set for 6:45 p.m. and will be held prior to council’s regular monthly meeting.
    The government budget is $1,308,532 and the utilities budget is $1,539,628.
    There is no tax or water/sewer rate increase proposed and the real estate tax will remain at 14.8 cents per $100 valuation. The personal property rate will remain at 63 cents per $100.

  • Plane misses runway, lands in field

     

    A 1957 Cessna plane came up short while attempting to land at Twin County Airport at about 1:50 p.m. Sunday, authorities say.

    Jon T. Stauffer of Thomasville, Ga., ended up landing the plane in an open field just across Airport Road from the runway — perhaps about a football field’s length away, said Virginia State Police Trooper R.B. Phipps.
