  • Judge: Woolwine can't withdraw guilty plea

    HILLSVILLE – A Carroll County judge on Tuesday denied a man’s motion to withdraw his guilty plea to a homicide charge and the case will move to the sentencing phase.

    Edgar DeHart Jr., the attorney for Christopher Dean Woolwine, indicated in court on Aug. 27 that his client wished to file a motion to withdraw his previous guilty plea to hit-and-run and second-degree homicide charges from a fatal crash on Halloween night of 2014.

  • Riverside wreck requires extraction

    Staff Reports

    A single-vehicle accident around 9 p.m. on Monday on Riverside Drive in Galax required the assistance of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department to extract the driver, according to Capt. Mike Ayers.

    The accident occurred just past Nuckolls Curve Road. Firefighters arrived to find a Chevrolet Corvette upside down in the road with a single occupant heavily entrapped, with part of the dashboard pinning one of the driver’s legs.

  • Police warn of scammers claiming to be from IRS

    An IRS scam has been circulating in the Twin Counties area, and local police warn residents to use caution.

    Galax resident Karen Clark notified The Gazette that she received two phone calls last week from a Washington, D.C. phone number. The calls are a recording that state the individual is being sued by the IRS and they need to return the call to prevent being taken to jail. Clark called the number back only to be put on hold by the person who answered and was then disconnected.

  • Larrowe leaving as Carroll adminstrator

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Administrator Gary Larrowe announced last Thursday that he would be resigning his post effective Dec. 31.

    Larrowe has served as county administrator in Carroll since 2005, and has served as the county’s chief economic development officer and executive director of the Public Service Authority (PSA), Industrial Development Authority (IDA) and Carroll County Natural Gas System.

  • Armed suspect dead after officer-involved shooting in Grayson

    State police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a Grayson County deputy on Sept. 23.

    The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office has identified the subject, who police say died at the scene after producing a gun and firing at a deputy, as Kenneth Ray Pinter Jr., 45, of Comers Rock Road in Troutdale.

    The deputy involved has not been named by authorities.

  • Brothers celebrate August birthdays

    Nolan Spurlin celebrated his third birthday Aug. 8 and his brother Luke Spurlin celebrated his first birthday on Aug. 29.

    They celebrated with family. Nolan and Luke are sons of Jason Spurlin and Jill Cockerham. Their grandparents are Danny and Carolyn Cockerham and Mike and Anita Spurlin. Great-grandparents are Rubye Cockerham and Louise Diamond.

    Timber Abrianna Mundy celebrated her seventh birthday Aug. 20 with a party at her home. Her sisters, Hope Gaynor and Taelynn Mundy, helped her celebrate along with many special friends and family members.

    She is the daughter of John and Tammy Utt of Woodlawn and Tim and Britt Mundy of Max Meadows. Her maternal grandparents are Brenda Liddle and Emory Bearden of Woodlawn and Charles Liddle of Galax. Her paternal grandparents are Don and Mabelene Beverly of Cana and Wayne Mundy of Cana.
