  • Asbestos discovery stalls prison construction

    INDEPENDENCE — Workers have stopped construction at a medium-security prison site near Independence after discovering naturally occurring asbestos in rock there.

    Workers found the naturally occurring asbestos vein on May 9, said Virginia Department of Corrections Director Larry Traylor.

  • Galax changing signals

    Throughout the next few weeks, the City of Galax will phase out the current loop system at intersections along East Stuart Drive (U.S. 58) and install cameras above traffic signals to improve the traffic flow patterns and help save the city money.

    Installing cameras at one intersection each time, it may take six to eight weeks to install all of the cameras. The city will start at the Cranberry Road/East Stuart Drive intersection on Monday, closing one lane of traffic for the installation.

  • Concerts mix fun with faith

    CVFallout.com will rock the youth ministry at Cliffview Church of God with a series of concerts beginning today, Friday.

    The jams kick off with all-girl Christian band Ilia appearing with Galax’s own Shadow of Eternity, starting at 8 p.m.

    Organizer Rob Swiger wanted to raise excitement levels and reach youth through the music, he explained to The Gazette in an e-mail. The opportunities to minister through Christian rock are better than ever.

  • Carroll PSA flushes fees

    HILLSVILLE — Service fees got flushed — for the time being — and alternative sewage treatment options resurfaced at a special Carroll Public Service Authority meeting on Tuesday.

    Authority members resolved several outstanding water and sewer system questions at the meeting, like scheduling a public hearing on changes in fees and rates.

  • Pollard to remain true to his colors

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County quarterback Bo Pollard hasn’t done anything officially as an Emory and Henry Wasp, but at least he is familiar with two words of the fight song: Blue and gold.

    Pollard will trade in the Blue Devils’ colors for the blue and gold of Emory and Henry this fall, having signed a letter-of-intent to play football there in a ceremony recently at the GCHS library.

  • Wingate rallies past Jaronski for Region C title

    RADFORD — Alyssa Wingate decided she’s had enough tennis for the time being. Not that Grayson County High’s top player objects to the game.

    She loves to play. But enough was enough.

    A cool-headed sophomore, Wingate collected herself after losing the second set to Radford’s Maggie Jaronski and rallied to win the individual singles part of the Group A Region C tournament Tuesday at Radford University.

    In the clinching game, she broke Jaronski’s serve and didn’t give up a point to take the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

  • Adult abuse too often ignored

    Each year, elders and incapacitated adults are victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation by caretakers and others.

    Signified by a purple ribbon, May is recognized as Adult Abuse Prevention Month, and social services departments in Galax, Carroll and Grayson get out information to make the public aware of the overwhelming statistics and what can be done to prevent abuse.

    Byron Fowler, a social worker at the Galax Department of Social Services, said he has posted information on church bulletins and provided information to the staff of local nursing homes.

  • Grayson can't hold early lead over Giles

    INDEPENDENCE –– For just the second time in the past five years, the Region C baseball championship trophy won’t reside in Grayson County.

    Giles powered its way to six runs in the third inning and outplayed the two-time defending regional champion Blue Devils down the stretch, rolling on to the semifinals with a 9-5 win Tuesday at the GNB Baseball Complex.

    The loss was a bitter end for Grayson County (17-6), which had won three of the past four Region C titles and reached the Group A finals each of the past two years.

    Tina Vaughan homered twice to bring Grayson County back from the brink of elimination and Megan Funk drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Blue Devils rallied for an 8-7 win over Floyd County in the Region C softball quarterfinals Tuesday at B.A. Rhudy Fields.

  • Burris signs with Bluefield College

    INDEPENDENCE — During her career as Grayson County’s third baseman and leadoff hitter, Lindsey Burris has been as reliable as the sunrise. A new day dawned recently for the young Blue Devil, who signed a letter-of-intent to play for Bluefield College.

    During the past three seasons, Burris has yet to finish with a batting average below .500. Despite being sidelined for two games recently with a minor knee injury, Burris still led the Twin Counties through the first week of May with a .625 average (24-for-39) with 21 runs scored and 14 stolen bases.
