  • ALERT: Expect traffic delays during 5K run

    FROM THE GALAX POLICE DEPARTMENT:

    The Galax Autumn Days 5K run will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m.

    Traffic will be blocked at U.S. 58 and the New River Trail intersection, as well as Grayson Street and the Meadow Street (Truck Route) intersection. 

    Eastbound traffic may detour by traveling Main Street to Meadow Street (Truck Route) and turning back north on Meadow.

    Westbound traffic may detour by traveling Meadow Street to Main Street and turning north on Main.

  • Second suspect charged in shooting

    INDEPENDENCE — A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred in Independence on Sept. 27.

    Independence Police Chief James Wagoner said Robert Vernon Molesworth III, 30, of Hilltop Drive, is charged with possession of marijuana and malicious wounding accessory before the fact.

    Warren Scott Robbins, 36, of 236 Nichols Drive, Independence, was charged with malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the case. Molesworth's gun was allegedly used in the shooting. 

  • Suspect arrested in firearms theft

    INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man in connection with a break-in and theft at a vacation home.

  • Shooting victim to undergo facial surgery

    INDEPENDENCE — A man shot in the face remains hospitalized after being critically injured in a Sept. 27 incident in Independence.
    Kenneth Eugene Group II, 47, of Hilltop Drive was shot with a .38 caliber pistol while sitting in a car at his residence. Police said Group was shot through the window glass.
    Group was taken to Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., for treatment.

  • Driver leads police on chase

    A man, who was allegedly driving recklessly on South Main Street in Galax, led police on a chase into Alleghany County, N.C., on Monday afternoon.

    After crashing on Glade Valley Road, at the intersection of Barrett Road, in Alleghany County, Jonathan Scott Eggert, 25, of Grandview Drive, Sparta, N.C., was arrested and will be charged in Virginia with DUI, reckless driving, eluding police, leaving the scene of the accident and property damage for striking a stop sign at U.S. 58 and West Stuart Drive in Galax.

  • Man shot in face, suspect in custody

    INDEPENDENCE — A 47-year-old Independence man was critically injured Sept. 27 following a shooting on Hilltop Drive in Independence.
    Independence Police Officer Ron Houk listed the victim as Kenneth Eugene Group II, who lives at 235 Hilltop Drive.
    Houk said Group was sitting in a 1994 Chevrolet when he was shot in the face with a .38 caliber pistol.

    Southwest Virginia police are finding methamphetamine labs at the fastest pace in five years as makers of the illegal stimulant switch from complicated laboratories to soda bottle mixes of supermarket ingredients.

  • Child porn charges filed

    HILLSVILLE — Police say they have arrested and charged a 20-year-old Hillsville man with possession of child pornography, according to a news release issued Sept. 22.
    David Michael Deskins, indicted Sept. 20 by the Carroll grand jury, has been accused of 11 counts of possession of child porn, according to information from the Hillsville Police Department. He is being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond.
