  • Computer repair calls are a scam, BBB says

    ROANOKE — “This is me moving your mouse.”
    Sure enough, a Dublin consumer’s computer mouse cursor began to move across the screen on its own.
    Someone had taken control of her computer. Unfortunately, minutes later they would have control of her bank account, as well.
    Multiple consumers have told the Better Business Bureau in Western Virginia that they have been contacted by an overseas computer repair company offering virus protection and claiming to work for Microsoft.

  • Drug task force seizes meth, pot... and go-cart

    A Baywood man charged in a drug distribution investigation had several items seized when police raided his home — including his go-cart.
    On March 22, members of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and the Twin County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at the home of Randy Eugene Osborne at 3170 Old Baywood Road near Galax.

  • Fries woman avoids scam, warns others

    FRIES — When Joan Hammond received a call saying she had won $1.5 million in a Las Vegas lottery, at first she was thrilled.
    Then, when the caller gave her some suspicious directions to claim the prize, reality set in.
    Hammond began investigating the “prize” and discovered she was the victim of a scam.
    She and the Better Business Bureau are working to inform the public about the scam, which also uses the BBB’s name without permission.
    Hammond shared her story so that “hopefully no one falls into their trap.”

  • Police chief back at work after threat charge

    INDEPENDENCE — Independence Police Chief James Wagoner has been returned to active duty after a brief administrative suspension that followed charges of communicating a threat to an investigator with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.
    Wagoner was suspended after Virginia State Police served him with a warrant on March 18, charging the chief with “use of profane, threatening or indecent language over public airways or by other methods.” The charge is a class 1 misdemeanor.

  • Galax woman faces drug, child abuse charges

    Shadaleigh Jean Davis, 23, of Galax faces multiple charges from a March 15 arrest, according to Galax Police Chief Rick Clark.
    On the offense date, Galax Police responded to a Galax residence along with representatives from the Galax Department of Social Services, to investigate alleged child endangerment, Clark said.
    A search of the residence found narcotics (methamphetamine), paraphernalia and U.S. currency. These findings were seized by the officers on the scene.

  • Pedestrian hit on U.S. 58 in Galax

    Galax police are investigating an accident involving a pedestrian that occurred on West Stuart Drive/U.S. 58 on Monday afternoon, according to Police Chief Rick Clark.
    Galax police and Galax-Grayson EMS responded to a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle approximately 250 feet west of the intersection of Stuart Drive and Armory Road.
    Terry Hammersley, 39, of Galax, was struck by a vehicle operated by Norma Anauo, who was traveling west on Stuart Drive, Clark said.

  • Ambulance driver charged in crash

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll Fire and Rescue driver received a ticket for failing to yield in a Sunday evening accident on U.S. 221, according to a report by a Hillsville police officer.
    The two-vehicle wreck occurred March 17 at about 8:30 p.m. on 221 at the entrance to the fire-rescue station, when ambulance driver Brian Schlabach, 29, attempted to turn onto the road with lights and sirens on while responding to an emergency call, according to a report by Officer Ricky Hayes.
