  • Sheriff presents annual report

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan recently released a summary report for the sheriff’s office for 2010-2011.
    In addition to deputies responding to 3,934 calls for service, the sheriff’s office had a busy year with 6,753 warrants served (1,040 criminal and 5,713 civil).
    The department recorded 160 felony charges in investigations alone.
    Drug arrests remained on the rise with, 161 charges stemming from 71 offenders.  
    Larceny and burglary charges came to a combined total of 113.

  • Truck driver injured in I-77 crash

    HILLSVILLE — A 48-year-old commercial truck driver from Liberty, N.C., was injured in a one-vehicle accident at Interstate 77's mile marker 11 at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

    The report by Virginia State Police Trooper J.R. Alderman said that driver Scott Wayne Stremmel, operating a 2007 Peterbilt for Carolina Tank Lines, ran off the road to the left.

    The rig continued through the median and then through the guardrail and down an embankment before coming to a stop.

  • Hillsville man faces 8 charges

    HILLSVILLE — A Thursday fight at a Main Street apartment led to eight charges against a 20-year-old Hillsville man, according to authorities.
    Authorities say the arrest of Terrence Wheeler Kade came after town officers received a call of a fight in progress.
    Officer Alan Gravley arrived on the scene first and saw a subject coming out of the apartment building where the call for help originated from, according to a news release from Hillsville Police Department.

  • Traffic stop turns up drugs

    HILLSVILLE — A bad motorcycle maneuver led to illegal drug charges against a 38-year-old Galax man last Saturday, according to Sheriff Warren Manning.
    A Carroll Deputy Mark Dickerson saw a motorcycle on Glendale Road near Gladeville Elementary School being operated in a reckless manner on June 18 at about 10:30 p.m.
    After stopping the motorcycle, the deputy searched the operator, David Andrew Dalton of 45 Hasson Lane, and discovered drugs, the sheriff said in a news release.

     HILLSVILLE — A 47-year-old woman faces illegal drug charges after a Carroll deputy found methamphetamine in a traffic stop June 16, according to Sheriff Warren Manning.

  • Child bitten by rabid fox in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE — A 10-year-old boy has to be treated for rabies after being bitten by a rabid fox last Thursday.
    Carroll County officials did not release the name of the child, but did confirm the incident at 546 Carrollwood Drive.
    Reports say that at about 7:40 p.m., the boy saw the fox near the residence and went inside to tell adults there.
    When the child went back outside, the fox lunged at him and bit him on the feet.

  • Martin injured in motorcycle crash Friday

    A long-time educator and Republican candidate for Carroll supervisor received several broken bones in a motorcycle crash last Friday.Authorities with the Wythe County Sheriff's Office were first on the scene to the accident on Wysor Highway in Barren Springs that left Ralph J. "Bob" Martin injured.
    Police received a 911 call on the accident at 11:18 p.m.The report says that Martin's 1996 Kawasaki ran off the road to the right, then came back onto the road and flipped.
