  • Charges filed in Carroll chase

    HILLSVILLE — A 30-year-old Galax man fled from a Carroll County deputy last Friday and ended up crashing at Lead Mines Road, earning him multiple charges, according to Sheriff Warren Manning.
    At about 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 14, Deputy Sheriff Mark Dickerson observed a red Isuzu rodeo driving recklessly on U.S. 58.
    Dickerson tried to pull the vehicle over, but the suspect headed north on Interstate 77 instead.

  • Police car struck during pursuit

    Sean Dillian Tyler Hanks of Dugspur was arrested after a pursuit in Galax on Oct. 16.
    Hanks was arrested after Sgt. Shawny Jones attempted to stop him on Country Club Lane for expired registration, according to a Galax Police Department report.
    When Jones activated the lights on his patrol vehicle, Hanks fled west on Poplar Knob Road.
    He was stopped after he struck a vehicle operated by Officer Andrew Burnett at the intersection of Meadow Street and East Stuart Drive, police said.

  • Speeder caught with lots of pot

    HILLSVILLE — An Oct. 5 traffic stop on Interstate 77 for speeding led to the discovery of more than five pounds of marijuana in the suspect vehicle, according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

    Sgt. Bobby Lyons pulled over a vehicle that had been traveling at 78 miles per hour near the 20.5 mile marker, authorities said. 

  • Galax PD to create Hispanic outreach

    A $140,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice will allow the Galax Police Department to hire a bilingual police officer and create an outreach to the Hispanic population in Galax.
    This Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS) grant will provide funding for an entry-level position, including salary and benefits and training, if needed, of a newly-hired, or rehired, full-time officer position. The Galax Police Department will be required to fund the position for 12 months in the fourth year.

  • Galax intersection reopens Wednesday

     

     Galax motorists are advised that the intersection of Glendale Road and Stuart Drive near Subway in Galax will re-open Wednesday. 

    The intersection has been closed for several months for construction and improvements. A new traffic pattern allowing two-way traffic will be in effect, Galax police said. 

  • Man charged with breaking into school

    HILLSVILLE — Authorities have charged a 22-year-old man with a break-in at Carroll County Intermediate School around 4:09 a.m. Saturday, according to information from school resource officer Buck Cox.
    A school custodian checking on the school found glass broken out of a back door and found items strewn in the floor on the inside. He called for Cox to investigate.

  • Grayson County garbage truck burns

    HILLSVILLE — Emergency responders quickly extinguished a vehicle fire in a Grayson County garbage truck just before 11 a.m. Thursday.

    The Grayson employees pulled over the truck on east bound U.S. 58 after other vehicles on the road started honking at them after the fire started showing in the compactor area in back.

    Hillsville Fire Department and Carroll Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene to put out the flames.

    The employees made it out of the vehicle and said they were fine afterwards. They weren't sure what caused the fire.

  • Passenger dies after motorcycle hits deer

    UPDATED 9/26/11:

    WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Officials are reporting a 49-year-old Southwest Virginia man has died as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Hillsville on Sept. 22.
