  • Tennessee man charged with invading Ivanhoe home

    UPDATED 2/25/14:

    HILLSVILLE — Charges have been placed against a father and son from Tennessee after an armed home invasion in the Ivanhoe section of Carroll early Saturday morning, according to Sheriff J.B. Gardner.
    The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at about 12:04 a.m. Saturday, saying that the armed men had broken into a residence in the 8000 block of Ivanhoe Road and threatened to kill a mother and two children, according to a news release from the sheriff.

  • Microsoft scam calls are back

    A computer repair scam is once again hitting Western Virginia consumers (and their hard drives) in a scheme to steal money and personal information.
    Multiple consumers have told the BBB in Western VA that they have been contacted by a computer technician claiming to work for Microsoft or a similar-sounding computer company.
    Consumers are then told that their computer either has operating problems, viruses, or other issues that need immediate attention.

    Authorities identify the suspects as Terry Conway Guynn, 37, and Krystal Darlene Poole, 40, in a Monday news release.

  • Police cite 567 for texting behind wheel

    RICHMOND — Troopers enforcing the texting-while-driving ban on Virginia highways cited 567 motorists in the six months from July to December 2013, according to a Virginia State Police news release.
    One year ago, the Virginia General Assembly moved this kind of distracted driving into a “primary offense” tier for law enforcement, meaning that a suspicion of texting is enough to get a motorist pulled over in a traffic stop.

  • Woman dies in moped crash

    A Sunday wreck involving a moped on Hebron Road led to the death of the operator, according to Virginia State Police.
    A report of the incident came in at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, when a caller told authorities that there was a person and a scooter in a ditch on Hebron Road, near a private road named Ponder Drive.
    Trooper S.E. Kinney responded on found the 2008 Zhejiag Wildfire moped and the driver, Mary E. Keller, 51, of Galax.
