  • Hillsville battles trailer fire

    HILLSVILLE — Hillsville firefighters responded to a trailer fire at 8177 Coulson Church Road, near Pine Grove Road, at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

    A neighbor saw a problem and called E911. No one was at the home in the trailer with a built-on extension when the fire broke out, emergency officials say.

    When they arrived on scene they found flames coming out of the broken out bedroom windows of the home, said Hillsville Fire Chief Donnie Spangler.

  • Suspect briefly slips out of police custody

    INDEPENDENCE — A Fredericksburg man faces several charges, including felony escape, following an incident in Independence on Sunday.
    Chief Deputy Mike Hash said the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a suspicious person sitting in a car on the parking lot of Grayson Inn and Suites.
    Deputy Alan Graham and Sgt. Arnold Peters were dispatched to the scene, where they found the man in a 2010 Hyundai reported stolen in Spotsylvania County.

  • Tractor-trailer destroyed by fire

    A tractor-trailer was practically unrecognizable after catching fire at Interstate 77's Exit 19 Tuesday after 2 p.m.

    Hillsville Fire, Carroll Fire-Rescue, Barren Springs Fire and Laurel Rescue Squad responded to the scene.

    Though there was a report of a fuel tank exploding, Hillsville Fire Department's David Young said that was actually a tire.

  • Man leads police on chase through two counties

    An attempted traffic stop resulted in a chase through two counties on Sept. 4.
    According to a report from the  Grayson County Sheriff’s Office,  Deputy Travis Jefferson attempted to stop a gray GMC truck near the county line on Ivanhoe Road near Fries at 11:30 p.m.
    The vehicle accelerated and attempted to elude Jefferson, who pursued the vehicle traveling north into Carroll County.
    “The vehicle reached speeds in excess of 70 mph and was driving in a very reckless manner,” the police report said.

  • Police officer assaulted

    HILLSVILLE — A 20-year-old Hillsville man has been charged after allegedly resisting arrest while appearing drunk in public on Aug. 31, according to town police.
    Joshua Edward Stanley was taken into custody after an altercation on North Main Street at about 9:45 p.m., according to a news release from the Hillsville Police Department.
    Sgt. Alan Gravley approached to arrest Stanley, who appeared to be intoxicated

  • Laurel Fork fights fire

    LAUREL FORK — Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at 8062 Dugspur Road Aug. 26 at about 6:19 a.m.

    Laurel Fork Fire Department volunteers found smoke coming out of the eaves of the home, owned by Mark Bolt, according to information from the fire department. Firefighters made entry and knocked down the fire in the living room.

    Some of the fire got up into the attic.
