 HILLSVILLE — A chemical agent introduced into the Woodlawn sewer system may have increased the smells blanketing the neighborhood, one resident told the Carroll Public Service Authority on Oct. 12.

Aquit has been added to the brand-new system at pump stations in an attempt to lessen a rotten egg odor coming out, PSA officials have reported, and Robin Whittington said at the regular October meeting that he can tell a difference.

"What you put in there... I can smell it, so that's getting out of the system, too," he said.

INDEPENDENCE — A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred in Independence on Sept. 27.

Independence Police Chief James Wagoner said Robert Vernon Molesworth III, 30, of Hilltop Drive, is charged with possession of marijuana and malicious wounding accessory before the fact.

Warren Scott Robbins, 36, of 236 Nichols Drive, Independence, was charged with malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the case. Molesworth's gun was allegedly used in the shooting. 

INDEPENDENCE — A man shot in the face remains hospitalized after being critically injured in a Sept. 27 incident in Independence.
Kenneth Eugene Group II, 47, of Hilltop Drive was shot with a .38 caliber pistol while sitting in a car at his residence. Police said Group was shot through the window glass.
Group was taken to Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., for treatment.
