  • Two injured in crash on Virginia 89

     

    Two people were injured Wednesday night in a head-on crash on Route 89, about five miles south of Galax.

    A Roberts Evergreens truck and a car were involved in the crash.

    The Galax Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene to extricate a woman from her vehicle.

    Two people were flown to Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., for treatment of undetermined injuries.

    No other details were available.

  • Authorities investigate hunter's shooting

    A Thanksgiving day hunting mishap left a Carroll County man with an injured hand and leg.
    Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries officers on Monday continued investigating the Nov. 25, incident that happened on Gambetta Road, says Lt. Rex Hill.
    Authorities say that Larry Lundy, 59, who lives on Gambetta, was sitting in a camouflaged "chair blind" in a field near Woods Path Road about 8:45 a.m.
    Lundy was wearing blaze orange at the time, but that didn't show up outside of the blind.

  • Head-on collision injures 5

    HILLSVILLE — A 36-year-old man who had reportedly taken a large amount of pills Sunday evening allegedly caused a vehicle accident on U.S. 52 that injured five.
    The Carroll County Sheriff's Office received a report from a Hillsville woman who said she had been choked and pushed by Tim Dunford at about 7 p.m., according to information from authorities.
    The caller also reported that Dunford had taken a large amount of Klonopin pills and left the scene in a green truck, according to information from the sheriff's office.

  • Police seize drugs, guns and cash

    FRIES — A Fries couple is being held without bond after a search of their home turned up drugs.
    On Nov. 24, members of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and the Twin County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at the residence of David Andrew Dalton, 37, and Amy Moore Dalton, 36, of Carnation Lane.  Investigators seized $1,013 in cash, two grams of methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a shotgun, a handgun, a Dodge truck and an ATV.

  • VDOT plowing ahead with changes

    State highway officials plan to improve interstate snow removal in Southwest Virginia this winter by changing contractors and increasing incident supervision, aided by GPS tracking devices that pinpoint the location of plows.

    Earlier this year, the Virginia Department of Transportation fired its previous interstate maintenance contractor, Infrastructure Corporation of America, for what VDOT called snow-related lapses along Interstate 81 and several other major roads.

  • Suspicious fire near Fries under investigation

     FRIES — The Grayson County Sheriff's Department is investigating a suspicious fire that gutted a vacant mobile home near Fries on the evening of Nov. 12.

    Fries Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene at 210 Bainbridge Rd, near Providence School, around 4:20 p.m. after a neighbor reported smoke coming from the home.

    Assistant Fire Chief Jimmy Stuart, who was in the vicinity, was first on scene. Upon arrival, Stuart noticed "heavy, black smoke about three feet off the floor," but no visible flames.

  • Two killed in massive I-77 crash

    FANCY GAP  — Photos taken by the Virginia State Police, of vehicles crumpled and wedged together on fog-bound Interstate 77, told the story of Tuesday's massive pileup in Carroll County near the North Carolina border.

    One hazy picture of the scene shows what looks like a GMC Suburban with West Virginia plates on top of a silver car and a white SUV next to a tractor-trailer. A door, possibly of the white SUV with a gaping hole in the side, lays on the ground next to highway markings.

  • Fugitive sought after escaping police

     A Galax man escaped a foot chase Nov. 4 on Glendale Road in Galax.

    According to officers from the Galax Police Department, Carroll County Sheriff's Department and the Virginia State Police, Mark Houston Newman, 43, had been banned from Harmony Village Apartments on Glendale Road.

    Newman was spotted on Harmony Village property about 2:30 p.m. by a Galax police officer and Newman took off running. Officers gave chase, but he got away from them.

  • Suspect to be charged in robbery

      HILLSVILLE — Authorities believe they have found the armed subject that jumped the pharmacy counter and demanded drugs from the CVS Pharmacy in Hillsville in January.

    After months of investigation, the Hillsville Police Department announced Monday that there is a suspect in the Jan. 2 armed robbery of an undisclosed amount of prescription drugs.

  • Missing man turns up safe

     HILLSVILLE — Plans to search for a missing man by air were grounded when the subject turned up at a residence in Laurel Fork on Wednesday.

    After about two days since Tom Funderburke of Misty Pine Lane went missing, Carroll officials had planned to use a helicopter to recheck part of the county for the 82-year-old Laurel Fork resident, Sheriff Warren Manning said.

    The flyover was delayed by poor visibility and, in the meantime, Funderburke showed up at a home on Little Valley Road just before noon.
