  • E-911 Commission hires new coordinator

    The Twin County E-911 Regional Commission on Tuesday announced the appointment of Jolena Young as the new E-911 Regional Coordinator.
    Young will succeed Eddie Hines, who is retiring April 30. Hines has been with the commission since 2002.
    The new coordinator will begin working part-time in March and move into the position full-time in April.
    Young is a native and resident of Carroll County and has worked for Nortel, Quintiles Inc., Glaxco Wellcome Inc, and Price Waterhouse LLP. She has held various positions in audit, finance and information systems.

  • Carrico pushes for prison funding

    RICHMOND — Still hoping to bring some jobs to Grayson at the county's still-unoccupied state prison, Del. Bill Carrico is trying to find the funding to begin operations there.
    "I introduced a budget amendment for $25 million to cover the operational cost of the prison," the Republican from Fries told The Gazette on the phone from Richmond last week.

  • Concealed machine guns in Va.?

    RICHMOND — Guns in the state Capitol? No problem.
    Guns in public libraries? Bring 'em on.
    But there's one line that Virginia's famously gun-friendly legislature apparently is not ready to cross. For now, at least, it will remain impossible to get a concealed-weapon permit to carry a machine gun.
    That's what Del. Jackson Miller's bill, HB2386, would have allowed. It failed to advance out of a House of Delegates subcommittee last week and so is likely dead for this legislative session.

  • DNA helps solve 2-year-old larceny case

    INDEPENDENCE — It took more than two years and a lot of investigative work, but the Independence Police Department finally made an arrest in a larceny case that occurred June 24, 2008.
    Cpl. Matthew Adams said DNA evidence led to the arrest of Harold Dean Payne, 54, of Denver, N.C.
    Payne is charged with two counts of damaging private property and two counts of grand larceny.

  • Dog rescued from rock ledge

    The Carroll County Sheriffs Department received a call from a man who had been raccoon hunting with his dogs the night of Jan. 28, and one of them had gotten stuck on a rock ledge near Byllesby Dam.

    Contact was made with the Virginia Park Service, but the agency did not have the resources due to the distance and height of the dog’s location.

  • 'Herbal incense' ban makes headway

    RICHMOND — Legislation is advancing in the General Assembly to outlaw a type of synthetic marijuana that resulted in an overdose in Grayson County last year.

    A bill on the issue sailed through a Virginia Senate committee last week without a dissenting vote.
    Also known as herbal incense, “spice” or K2, the synthetic marijuana consists of chemically treated plants that produce a high when smoked.

  • Hillsville town hall vandalized

    HILLSVILLE — Officials have consulted their videotape to see if anybody recognizes the individual who vandalized Hillsville Town Hall early Saturday morning.
    At about 3;21 a.m. Saturday, a man went into an unlocked door on the north side of town hall, according to Town Manager Larry South. This area is left unlocked because it houses various brochures for visitor information and contains the night deposit box for bill payment.
    The subject threw some of the brochures around and broke some glass on the rack.

  • Man charged with malicious wounding

    CANA — A woman was hospitalized for an eye injury after a report of a domestic dispute at 863 Pauls Creek Road last Thursday.
    Deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded at about 2:20 p.m. after the report of a verbal confrontation at that address, according to First Sgt. Pat Harner. The two participants were identified as Patricia Hill and Robert Jones.
    The verbal argument is said to have turned violent when one of them picked up a golf club.
    Deputies charged Jones, 71, with malicious wounding.
