HILLSVILLE — High winds caused damage to around nine homes, two with significant damage, in an area around the Coon Ridge Road-U.S. 52 intersection early Friday morning.

Hillsville Fire Department, Carroll Fire Rescue, Carroll Sheriff's Department and Virginia State Police members responded to the scene after wind gusts damaged several roofs and porches on the homes over about a quarter mile area at 3 a.m., according to Trooper Chuck Campbell. The same winds damaged some outbuildings and caused a tree to fall across U.S. 52 near Hanging Tree Road.

FRIES — A Fries woman has reported a potential phone scam that involves a caller who says they are from the Republican National Committee.
The woman, who asked that her name not be published, reports that she received a call last week from someone claiming to be from the RNC. “They went through a long spiel about getting more Republican-held seats in Congress, and needing a donation,” she said.
The caller asked if he could put her down for a $65 donation.

Vaughan-Bassett Furniture in Galax shut down operations on Wednesday, after a water tank outside of the factory collapsed, causing structural damages and injuring an employee.
Employee Johnny Bunn was reportedly near the tank when it collapsed, and was washed down the bank and into Chestnut Creek by the sudden flow of water from the structure.

The Gazette is partnering with local police departments to publish photos of suspects arrested and charged.
