  • Three charged after high-speed chase

    INDEPENDENCE — Charges were placed against three suspects following a high-speed chase in Independence on April 22.
    Independence Police Officer Darren Barrett said he clocked a 1990 Chevrolet pickup traveling 65 mph in a 35 mph zone on East Independence Avenue. The vehicle that turned off U.S. 21 onto Peach Bottom Road.
    The chase ended about five miles later, when the vehicle pulled into a driveway.
    Barrett charged Brandon Wayne Poole of Independence with eluding police and reckless driving.

  • Local woman target of lottery scam

    INDEPENDENCE — On April 25, the security manager at Grayson National Bank reported one of her customers was a victim of a lottery scam.
    The victim, who wished to remain anonymous, attempted to cash a check for $4,800 at Grayson National Bank’s main branch, according to a press release from the Grayson Sheriff’s Office. GNB officials, suspicious of the checks validity, called the issuer of the check.
    When they discovered the check was a counterfeit, they called the sheriff’s office.

  • Galax man charged in computer scam

    Anthony Gonzalez, 45, of Virginia Street in Galax was arrested April 24 and charged with two misdemeanor counts of obtaining money by false pretenses and one felony count of obtaining money by false pretenses.
    According to a Galax Police Department report, the arrest stemmed from an investigation by Senior Police Officer Bill Shaffner. The department received complaints from victims that Gonzalez solicited the sale of laptop computers between February and April, taking funds in advance. No computers were delivered to the victims.

  • Cox faces grand larceny charge

    HILLSVILLE — A 28-year-old Galax man has been charged with grand larceny from Pipers Gap on April 20, according to Carroll Sheriff Warren Manning.
    Brandon Scott Cox faces charges for allegedly taking a 2004 Jeep Wrangler. The Galax Police Department recovered the vehicle the same day it was taken.
    Cox fled on foot when he was approached by law enforcement, according to information from the sheriff’s office. He was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit by Galax officers.
    Other items, including tools, were missing from the vehicle, deputies say.

  • Fatal crash may have medical cause

     UPDATED 9:37 p.m.  — The Thursday accident on Interstate 77 that ended the life of a Vienna, W.Va., man may have been caused by a medical issue, authorities believe.

    The accident near the 7.2 mile marker is still being investigated by Virginia State Police.

  • N.C. man charged with stealing truck

    A North Carolina man faces charges in Grayson County for allegedly stealing a car.
    On March 28, members of the Grayson Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Skyline Highway on a report of a stolen vehicle.
    The victim, Danny Spencer of Kenbrook Drive in Galax, reported that he parked his black 1995 Ford F-250 at Jack & John’s Garage at 5 a.m. to ride with a friend to work. When he returned from work, the vehicle was missing.
    The vehicle was recovered in Surry County, N.C. on March 30.

  • Two charged with stealing vehicle

    The Carroll County Sheriff's Office reports that two men have been charged in connection with the grand larceny of a vehicle that occurred sometime during the morning hours of Feb. 17 in Cana.

    Those charged are Ross Edward Payne, 22, of Cana and John Conlee LaForce of Frederick, Md.

    Sheriff Warren Manning said the Ford F-250 pickup was taken from a residence in Cana. "After a month-and-a-half-long investigation, teh vehicle was located in Sparta, N.C."
