  • A remedy for rough roads

    City crews will begin road repairs this week now that an asphalt plant in Carroll County has begun production, said Galax City Manager Keith Barker.
    Based on priority, Hospital Drive will first be repaired, along with Country Club Lane and Fries Road.
    City workers will take a look at each road in Galax, said Barker, and will be making repairs over the next three weeks.
    Once asphalt is received, the public works department will start with the major challenges and most-traveled roadways, and then work into residential areas.

  • Deputies seek Cana man for drug charges

    HILLSVILLE — A Wednesday search of a home in Cana led to the discovery of guns, drugs and paraphernalia, according to information from the Carroll Sheriff's Office.

    Deputies have warrants that charge Thomas Eric Lowe, 38, after serving a search warrant at the home.

    "During the search deputies discovered several long guns, a sawed-off shotgun, a handgun, crystal methamphetamine, marijuana, illegal prescription narcotics and paraphernalia commonly used for the sale of illegal drugs," the news release said.

  • Woman falls, struck by car

    HILLSVILLE — A Hillsville woman fell in a bank parking lot and while on the ground was hit by a vehicle Saturday at 11:55 a.m.
    According to a report from the Hillsville Police Department, Lois Akers fell at the Bank of America parking lot on Main Street and was unable to get to her feet.
    Police weren't certain why the woman could not get up again, but while she was down, the driver of a 1999 Chevy Blazer tried to back up and could not see Akers.
    Akers was struck. She was flown out by helicopter for medical attention.

  • Drugs driving crime in Galax

    Galax has experienced marked increases in reported crimes since 2008, including a 17 percent increase in “Part A” crimes — property crimes, crimes of violence, gambling, prostitution, extortion and narcotics, Galax Police Chief Rick Clark told city council during his annual report on March 14.
    “Part B” crimes — crimes that are generally considered nuisance crimes or quality of life issues — were down by 13 percent.

  • Smallwood charged for meth

     

    On March 9, members of the Grayson County Sheriff's Office charged Anthony Franklin Smallwood, 42, of 3926 Comers Rock Road in Elk Creek, with possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine.
    According to the sheriff's department, 10 grams of meth was seized, along with $571 in cash.
    Smallwood was transported to the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin and held on a $5,000 secured bond.
    Deputy Eric Testerman, Investigator Todd Perkins and Sheriff Richard Vaughan made the arrest.

  • Galax man charged in abduction

     

    COMERS CREEK — Michael Ray Brown Jr., 37, of Galax, has been charged abduction in connection with a kidnapping and murder investigation in Smyth County.

    The Smyth County Sheriff's Department reported on Monday that Brown is one of five people charged in the abduction and death of Nathan Cord Combs, 19, of Marion, who had been missing since March 7. Combs' body was found March 12 in the Jefferson National Forest.

  • Targets harassed, threatened in debt collection scam

    A local woman recently was the target of a debt collector scam that included harassing phone calls over the course of three days, threats of litigation and demands for payment of a non-existent debt.
    Jackie Haga said her mother became so distraught that she actually wrote the scammer a check, but the bank was able to stop payment.
    Now, Haga wants to warn others about the scam, especially if they are on a fixed income or elderly.

  • Grayson attorneys warn of debt collector scam

    Several members of the Grayson‑Galax Bar Association have reported that several clients have contacted their offices about a potential scam.
    By pretending to be debt collectors, callers have threatened to have clients arrested unless they immediately make a payment toward an alleged bad check.
    Many of the calls included calls to family members, claiming to be attempting to collect a debt owed by the client, said bar president Roger Brooks.
