    The Galax Police Department credits social networking and help from citizens for finding the suspect in a purse snatching last week.

  • Items stolen from Galax barn

    The Galax Police Department is investigating the theft of items from a barn off Cliffview Road that was reported on Nov. 16.
    According to a police report, the stolen items included two Circle SX2 saddles, two yellow rain coats, three horse bridles, two horse breast collars, two halters, one horse lead and one Textan saddle.
    Anyone with information about this theft or any other crime is asked to call Galax Police at 236-8101 or use the anonymous “Text a Tip” link on the police department’s Facebook page.

  • Woman charged in death of trooper

    A woman has been charged in the death of a Virginia State Trooper with ties to the Twin Counties.
    State police last Wednesday charged a Hanover County woman in the October death of Trooper Andrew D. Fox.
    Angelica C. Valencia, 27, of Doswell, is charged with one count of reckless driving.
    Police say Valencia was driving the 1992 Jeep Cherokee that struck and killed Fox on the night of Oct. 5, while he was directing traffic outside the Virginia State Fair.

  • Fries men face drug charges after traffic stop

    Two Fries men are charged in connection with a Nov. 2 traffic stop in Galax that led to drug-related charges.
    Police said that drugs were found after Officer Trevor Jefferson pulled over a vehicle operated by Ronnie Aaron Piner.
    Piner was originally pulled over for a traffic violation, police said, and further observation led Jefferson to investigate further.
    A search of Piner turned up drug paraphernalia, according to a police report. (Piner was not included in a previous newspaper report about the traffic stop.)

  • Police say suspect was caught in the act

    INDEPENDENCE — An Independence man has been charged with breaking and entering following an incident that occurred Oct. 21.
    Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan said deputies responded to an alleged residential burglary in progress at 269 Beaver Dam Road in Independence about 5:30 p.m. that evening.
    Upon arrival, Deputy Eric Testerman and Sgt. Arnold Peters found a lock that had been broken off of the garage door.

  • Charge filed in I-77 fatality

    Virginia State Police have charged a truck driver with involuntary manslaughter for actions that allegedly lead to the death of a Hillsville man on Oct. 30.
    According to a state police report, Donald Ray Alexander, 44, of Houston, Texas, was driving north on Interstate 77 in Wythe County when he used a crossover that was for authorized vehicles only. He was trying to cross over to the southbound lanes in his flatbed tractor-trailer.

  • Hillsville man killed in Wythe County crash

    WYTHEVILLE — A 56-year-old Hillsville man was pronounced dead at the scene of a Tuesday accident involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 in Wythe County.

    A Virginia State Police report identified the victim as John Schrader.

    Schrader, driving a 2012 Chevy Sonic, had been driving south on I-77 at the 44 mile marker at about 6:49 p.m.

  • Parkway issues travel advisory

    Blue Ridge Parkway officials are asking motorists to avoid traveling the parkway at least through Wednesday, especially on sections in Virginia affected by Hurricane Sandy.

    Parkway officials are concerned that a large number of trees may come down as a result of further winds.
