  • Man dies in Cana crash

    CANA — An 82-year-old Cana man died in a single-vehicle crash on Bear Trail Road at about 8:45 a.m. Monday.
    A Virginia State Police report identified the victim as Garnett William Willard from Cana.
    Willard had been driving a 1999 Ford F150 at the time of the accident when it went off the left side of the road and struck a tree on Bear Trail, about three-quarters of a mile east of Polar Lane.
    The medical examiner will conduct an investigation into the cause of death.
    Cana Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to assist.

  • Man charged with assault of child

    HILLSVILLE — A 33-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault of a child after a family member complained to authorities, according to Hillsville Police Department personnel.
    Phillip Anthony Talbert faces the charge after a March complaint leading to an investigation by Sgt. James Alderman.
    Hillsville Police Department’s interim Chief Jason Hawks said the investigation also extended to Pulaski County, where Talbert was said to reside part-time.

  • Police say couple used fake money orders to pay for motel stay

    HILLSVILLE —  A Woodlawn couple faces multiple charges after allegedly paying for a motel stay with counterfeit U.S. Postal Service money orders, according to information from the Hillsville Police Department.
    Police charged Heath Harold Spalding, 37, and Sherri Nicole Spalding, 39, with two counts each of felony defrauding motels for more than $200 in September, according to court information.

  • Police seize marijuana, $125,000 in cash

    CHARLOTTESVILLE — An Independence man has been arrested on drug charges and more than $125,000 in cash and other items have been seized by law enforcement officers.
    According to a news release from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department, Virginia State Police narcotics agents contacted the sheriff’s office on Oct. 1 in reference to an Independence resident who was arrested by the Charlottesville Police Department for alleged possession of more than three pounds of marijuana with the intent to distribute.

  • Fire drives Cana family out of home

     

    CANA — A family in Cana woke up to a home full of smoke early Tuesday morning and managed to escape the flames, according to emergency officials.

    The Cana Fire Department received a call to a house fire at the family home of Wayne McMillian on Duck Lane near Bear Trail, shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday, Chief Richard Sowers reports. 

  • Woman seriously hurt in crash, charges pending

    WOODLAWN — An 80-year-old Woodlawn woman went through several hours of surgery for serious injuries stemming from a two-vehicle wreck that occurred last Wednesday.
    A Virginia State Police report by Trooper C.M. Delp says that Ila Faye Payne, driving a 2000 Chevy Cavalier, attempted to pull out from Breezy Ridge Road and go west on U.S. 58. at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 3.
    The Cavalier was struck by a Buick driven by Patrick Joseph Kelly Sr. of Fancy Gap.

  • Local man lost $11,000 in scam

    Police in Hillsville and Independence report new scams targeting local residents.
    The "American Dreams" contest scam already has cost one man $11,000. Other scams involve phone calls from a fake sweepstakes and a bogus "envelope-stuffing" job.
    The Independence Police Department has issued a warning to area residents to beware of a scam that cost an Independence man $11,000.

  • Siblings charged with Cana jewelry theft

    HILLSVILLE — A Winston-Salem, N.C., man who allegedly broke into a home in Cana on Dec. 16, 2011, and evaded capture for about nine months now faces charges through joint police work by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Winston-Salem, Police Department.
    The Carroll Sheriff’s Office received a report from an Ollie McCreary on U.S. 52 near Flower Gap Road in Cana that she had returned home on that day and discovered an African-American man in her house, according to Investigator Kevin Kemp.
