  • Survey work on I-77 to impact Carroll traffic

    Lane closures will be in effect on Interstate 77 in Carroll County during May 16-30 due to daytime survey work on northbound and southbound lanes.

    Lane closures may be in place at various locations on weekdays between mile markers 0 and 8.

  • Two arrested for break-ins

    Two people have been arrested and charged with a series of offenses that occurred on May 8 in Galax.
    Shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Officer Chris Hines of the Galax Police Department was dispatched to Poplar Street to investigate the suspicious conduct of two individuals.
    According to a police report, Hines observed a male and female acting unusual. During a field interview, Hines' observations led to the discovery of suspected narcotics and what he believed to be stolen property.

  • CCHS locked down Thursday after texted threat

    HILLSVILLE — Authorities locked down Carroll County High School after a male student not in the facility at the time Tweeted and texted a threat of violence against another student on Thursday, according to authorities.
    Carroll Sheriff J.B. Gardner confirmed that a 17-year-old male has been charged with electronically communicating a threat.
    Authorities did not identify the student involved, because he is a juvenile.

  • Police seek ambulance hit-and-run suspect

    Miguel Ortega Rodrigues, 23, of Sutherland Road in Galax, allegedly fled the scene after crashing into a Galax-Grayson EMS ambulance, said Galax Police Captain James Cox.
    The Galax Police Department is searching for Rodrigues, and plans to charge him with hit-and-run, driving on a suspended license and failing to obey a stop sign.

  • Disturbance leads to arrests, capture of fugitive

    HILLSVILLE — One Dugspur resident and three people from Hillsville were charged when town police went to investigate an April 16 domestic disturbance.
    Hillsville police report that Terry Jean Walls, 39, of Dugspur and William Brent Walls, 21, of Hillsville each were charged with one count of assault and battery.
    Brianna Lashei Floyd, 21, of Hillsville was charged with two counts of assault and battery, police say.
    Justin Lee Quesenberry, 26, of Hillsville was arrested on a fugitive warrant from South Carolina.

  • Allen injured in work-related accident

    LAMBSBURG — The owner/operator of a Fancy Gap garage remained in a North Carolina hospital Tuesday after a work-related accident Monday at Love's Truck Stop.

    Emergency officials said that Victor Allen was attempting to tow a recreational vehicle when it rolled off and struck and injured him.

  • Fugitive faces 21 local charges

    HILLSVILLE — A 34-year-old Hillsville man faces felony charges as the result of a forgery investigation by the Hillsville and Galax police departments.
    Hillsville Police Department’s Sgt. James Alderman and Sgt. Alan Gravley arrested Scott Eric Jarels on April 19.

  • Galax to take back old prescription drugs

    The Galax Police Department will sponsor Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Galax Police Department.
    The department will give the public the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
    The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
    The Galax Police Department is located at 353 North Main Street.
