  • Drug bust snares meth and crack, guns and cash

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County authorities and Drug Enforcement Administration agents continue an investigation that has so far yielded a large quantity of methamphetamine, cocaine and crack cocaine, as well as guns and cash, according to information from Sheriff J.B. Gardner.
    Total value of the drugs seized tops $111,000.

  • Deputies rescue woman lost in woods

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County deputies assisted a 72-year-old woman who got lost in the woods near 579 Volunteer Road on May 7 at about 10:30 p.m., according to Sheriff J.B. Gardner.
    Deputies had received a report from concerned neighbors about the woman, who had gone for a walk without her cell phone or a flashlight about 2.5 hours before.
    Corporals Barry Lineberry and David Walls and Deputy Cody Edwards responded to the scene.

  • Police look into suspicious fire

    A May 8 fire in Carroll County is under investigation.
    The Galax Fire Department responded to a call at 400 Potrock Road after midnight last Wednesday. Firefighters arrived to find an outbuilding completely destroyed by the flames.
    The outbuilding appeared to be abandoned, along with the trailer that sat in front of the building, according to firefighter Chris Hennis.

  • Police warn of fake $20 bills

    The Galax Police Department is warning the public about reports of counterfeit $20 bills received by several local businesses.
    A local bank reported seeing several of these counterfeit bills turned in by local merchants, according to Galax Police Capt. James Cox. The merchants, he said, are unaware that the money they are turning in to the bank is counterfeit.

  • Program saves prisoners' lives, county's money

    INDEPENDENCE – Three years ago, Grayson County took the chance on a new alternative sentencing program that very few localities had tried. Today, the Day Report Center has provided the county a net savings of $149,000 and rising.
    Supervisors Chairman Mike Maynard remembers when a representative from Giles County came and spoke to Grayson officials about a Day Report Program, designed to keep non-violent offenders out of jail and help rehabilitate them into productive citizens.

  • Anders in stable condition after being shot by deputies

    UPDATE 5/7/13:

    Randy Lee Anders is now in stable condition, according to Grayson Sheriff Richard Vaughan. Charges are still pending the outcome of a Virginia State Police investigation of the shooting.
