  • Suspect escapes custody in Hillsville

    HILLSVILLE — Local authorities apprehended a Galax man after he allegedly fled from state police custody on Wednesday afternoon.
    According to reports from Virginia State Police, Trooper D.B. Suthers had Daniel Lee Lineberry, 35, of 268 Crackers Neck Road in Galax, at the Carroll County Magistrate’s office for processing on May 7.
    “I had picked him up for a probation violation, state and federal, and he was wanted on direct indictment on drug charges involving Schedule III narcotics in Grayson County,” Suthers told The Gazette.

    HILLSVILLE — Local authorities have apprehended 32-year-old Cheston Stoneman, who had been sought in connection with the malicious wounding of a Wythe County deputy last month.

    WHITETOP – A Whitetop man was arrested April 17, but not before a lengthy foot chase that ended with him being apprehended in a creek.

  • Stoneman sought after Wythe deputy's injury

    WYTHEVILLE — Authorities are searching for a 32-year-old Hillsville man accused of cutting a Wythe County deputy on Sunday while fleeing on foot, according to Wythe Chief Deputy Keith Dunagan.
    Authorities identified the suspect as Cheston Stoneman.

  • U.S. Cellular break-in suspects sought

    The Galax Police Department is on the lookout for two men in connection with a recent break-in at U.S. Cellular.
    On April 3 at 8 a.m., police responded to a report of a broken door glass at U.S. Cellular store at 1136 E. Stuart Drive.
    According to a police report shared with The Gazette by Capt. James Cox, two men broke in to the store at 7 a.m. by breaking through the front door glass, and removed an undisclosed amount of merchandise from the building.

  • I-77 motorcyclist critical after crash

    HILLSVILLE — Virginia State Police said that a Bluefield man injured in a Friday morning motorcycle wreck on Interstate 77 was in critical condition.
    A helicopter flew Darren Wayne Coe, 45, to Roanoke for treatment after the incident near mile marker 19 at about 10:30 a.m.
    When southbound traffic slowed in front of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Coe could not stop, according to a report by Trooper C.M. Delp.
    The motorcycle struck the back of a 2004 van, driven by Donald Goetz of Edinboro, Pa.

  • Wind overturns tractor-trailers on I-77

    LAMBSBURG — Two state vehicles were struck and damaged after gusts estimated  at more than 100 mph also knocked over two tractor-trailers Tuesday, according to Virginia State Police reports.
    State police and Virginia Department of Transportation officials responded shortly after 3 p.m. when the first incident happened at the familiar spot near the 3 mile marker in the northbound lanes, according to First Sgt. Mike Musser.

  • Police receive report of cane-wielding woman

    Galax police were called to Food City in Galax on April 14, on a report of an elderly woman hitting cars in the parking lot with her cane and yelling at them.
    A later police report confirmed that the situation was a verbal altercation between a man’s girlfriend and his ex-wife.
    “She didn’t strike any cars with a cane, but [she] did roll a buggy into the other woman’s vehicle,” said Capt. James Cox of the Galax Police Department. “Apparently, she was flinging the cane around, but didn’t hit anything.”
