  • Cana man dies in N.C. crash

    A Cana man died on Monday from critical injuries sustained in a June 14 motorcycle accident on Pipers Gap Road.
    Stanley Gray Collins, 75, was traveling on Pipers Gap Road in Galax heading to Mount Airy, N.C., when he reportedly lost control of his motorcycle, according to Surry County, N.C., Emergency Services Director John Shelton.
    The motorcycle veered off of the road and struck a utility pole and a mailbox located at 309 Wise Man’s Trail. “He had critical injuries on the scene,” Shelton said.

  • Fatal Interstate 77 wreck occurs in rainstorm

    HILLSVILLE — An early Friday morning downpour contributed to a wreck with a fatality on Interstate 77 at about 12:50 a.m., according to Virginia State Police Trooper C.H. Campbell Jr.
    The incident happened near the 12.5 mile marker when a 2009 Mitsubishi Gallant driven by Susan Petty, 55, of Lexington, S.C., hydroplaned in the rainstorm while traveling north, as the driver attempted to pass a commercial vehicle.
    Petty lost control and the vehicle, spun into the guardrail and then back out into the lanes of travel near the center line, facing south.

    A state agency is warning Medicare beneficiaries and caregivers about recent complaints regarding suspicious telemarketing to beneficiaries in many regions of Virginia.
    Scam artists are pretending to be from Medicare and asking beneficiaries for their bank information in order to receive their new Medicare card and/or their Medicare benefits, according to a report from the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program

  • Anders charged with officer assault

    INDEPENDENCE — A 32-year-old Grayson County man who was wounded April 29 in a shooting involving Grayson County Sheriff’s deputies faces several charges after his release from Bristol Medical Center on May 30.
    Randy Lee Anders was shot four times after he was found hiding in the basement of a home owned by his neighbor, Richard Spencer.

  • Fatality leads to criminal investigation

    FANCY GAP — Carroll County authorities have launched a criminal investigation of a fatality on Interstate 77 that claimed the life of a local tow truck driver over Memorial Day weekend.
    Russell Nelson, 75, owner of Russell’s Garage in Hillsville, was struck by a car and killed on May 25, while answering a call on I-77.
    He had been in the towing business for more than 30 years, coworkers said, often responding to help others on the historically dangerous stretch of highway.
