  • Ohio man killed in multi-vehicle crash

    UPDATED 9/24/13:

    Virginia State Police are still investigating a series of wrecks Saturday on Interstate 77 in Carroll County that resulted in multiple injuries and one fatality.
    Police blamed low visibility and weather for setting off the chain of events on the historically dangerous section of highway. A driver from Ohio died at the scene.
    According to a news release, state police were called to the scene of the accidents at 10:51 a.m., in the northbound lanes of I-77 at the 9 mile marker on top of Fancy Gap Mountain.

    Two Galax men have been arrested and charged after investigators conducted searches at a local business and at least one residence on Monday, according to a report from the Galax Police Department.

    A Galax man was arrested and charged with multiple drug and traffic offenses after a vehicle pursuit on Sept. 14, according to Galax Police Chief Rick Clark.

  • Grayson approves resource officers

    INDEPENDENCE – After months of discussions between the school board and county supervisors, Grayson County Public Schools will receive two new school resource officers for the current school year.
    County officials came to an agreement on how to pay for the new officers, after earlier funding discussions seemed to indicate the school board could not afford to pay the amount of local matching funds that the supervisors required.

  • Drug taskforce serves warrants in Galax

    Police tactical teams wearing body armor and brandishing automatic rifles took suspects into custody on Monday afternoon, as investigators searched a business and at least one residence in Galax.

    The tactical units from Galax and Carroll County were serving drug-related warrants on behalf of the Twin County Drug Taskforce, police on the scene reported.

    HILLSVILLE — A suspect in a Sept. 12 hit-and-run wreck and an abduction now faces additional charges after being caught Sunday, according to Virginia State Police.

  • Meth lab materials found in Hillsville

    HILLSVILLE — Investigators believe that an unknown subject dumped the contents of a mobile methamphetamine lab in an alley behind Hillsville Town Hall on Thursday, according to Hillsville police.
    Police received a call from a town maintenance worker about some suspicious materials found in shrubs in an alley near a town parking lot on Mill Street, said Capt. James Alderman. The worker did not approach the items, but notified authorities.

  • Thursday carjacking suspect sought

    HILLSVILLE — Authorities on Friday continued their search for the suspect from a Thursday afternoon hit and run and abduction that happened in Carroll County, according to Virginia State Police.
    Troopers have identified Joseph Beuford Lee Mabe as the suspect who got involved in a motor vehicle accident in the Oak Grove section of Carroll, according to State Police First Sgt. Mike Musser.
