  • Tractor trailer causes multiple wrecks on I-77

    Local rescue squads, fire departments and police aided Cana Volunteer Rescue Squad after a series of accidents on Interstate 77 last Saturday.
    According to a report from the Virginia State Police, a total of 15 vehicles, two of them tractor trailers, were involved in seven separate accidents, said a representative of Cana Volunteer Rescue Squad.
    "From what we could determine, the cause was a tractor trailer that lost control, ran off the roadway and overturned," said First Sgt. Mike Musser of the Virginia State Police.

  • Alleged pot grower is Carroll's most wanted

     

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll authorities have named a suspect in a marijuana growing operation as their latest "most wanted," after finding pot, cash and guns during a May 13 search.

    The Carroll County Sheriff's Office put out an alert Monday to seek information from the public that would lead to Thomas James Read, 50, being located.

  • VDOT gets $6 million for I-77 signs

    SALEM — The Commonwealth Transportation Board has found funding for safety improvements on Interstate 77 in Carroll County, including additional condition sensors and a variable speed limit system.
    These measures were already planned, but unfunded, when nearly 100 cars were involved in a massive Easter Sunday crash that killed three and injured dozens more on the foggy stretch of highway in Carroll.

  • Carroll wrecks result in injuries

    Virginia State Police troopers investigated three wrecks with injuries in Carroll County from May 12 and 13.
    The first happened last Sunday at 10 a.m. on Timberline Road at the intersection with Virginia 885, according to a report by Trooper R.B. Phipps.
    Ashley Nicole Moretz, 22, of Galax, driving a 2003 Dodge Neon, was exceeding the posted speed limit at the time, police said.
    A 1994 Buick Regal, driven by Margie Sizemore, 82, of Galax, attempted to pull out of 885 when it was struck by the Neon.
    Phipps charged Moretz with reckless driving.

  • Drug bust snares meth and crack, guns and cash

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County authorities and Drug Enforcement Administration agents continue an investigation that has so far yielded a large quantity of methamphetamine, cocaine and crack cocaine, as well as guns and cash, according to information from Sheriff J.B. Gardner.
    Total value of the drugs seized tops $111,000.
