INDEPENDENCE — Sharp increases in coal prices are to blame for Appalachian Power Company’s price hikes in recent years throughout the company’s service area, a company representative told local officials last week.

The Carroll County Public Service Authority members received an update on the status of the Fancy Gap water and sewer projects at their regular August meeting Monday.
Paperwork in their board packet noted that the water portion awaits final authorization from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to advertise for construction bids.
INDEPENDENCE — In a surprise move, Grayson County Board of Supervisors’ Vice Chairman Doug Carrico said Wednesday morning that he will not seek re-election as the board’s at-large member.
Carrico, now serving his second term, announced last week that he would run as a political independent after losing the Republican nomination to David Sexton during a mass meeting in July.
