  • Treasurer says county can't cut state-mandated salaries

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson Treasurer Fields “Junior” Young was upset with the board of supervisors after several cuts to his department and pleaded his case during a public hearing for the 2008-09 budget on June 12.

    “I’m quite upset,” said Young. “I unleashed my terror on the county administrator this morning. The last place I thought I would be would be here to talk about my budget.”

  • Funds denied, but school planning proceeds

    HILLSVILLE — Given permission to plan — but nothing else — Carroll School Board members will do what they can to map out updates and upgrades to the county’s three remaining schools.

    Even as the educators moved ahead with efforts to plan the final phase of facility improvements — despite the denial of a request for $500,000 from the county supervisors — School Board Member Reginald Gardner asked the board to prepare for a systems failure that might take Carroll High, Carroll Intermediate or Woodlawn School out of commission.

  • Grand jury indicts 34 in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll grand jury met Monday and issued several indictments.

    An indictment is not a finding of guilt, merely a formal charge.

    As has become standard procedure, the court sealed all direct indictments until the papers could be served to the individuals named. About 50 indictments were sealed.

    Indictments issued include:

    • Edward Allen Alley, grand larceny from Wenter Brown

    • Tiffany Leann Barker, possession of methamphetamine, a schedule II drug

  • River cleanup set for Saturday

    The New River Wildlife & Conservation Club is planning its second annual river cleanup project in Grayson County.

    The cleanup is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

    The project is an effort to improve the water quality and the beauty of New River.

    Club members are asking for volunteers who would like to assist in the task. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their flat-bottom boats or canoes to the New River Wildlife Building at 7107 Riverside Drive near Fries that day.

  • Water rates to increase

    INDEPENDENCE — Several customers who have been paying residential rates to the Town of Independence for water will soon pay higher bills.

    After an evaluation of the town’s records by Lane Engineering earlier in the year, several customers — not classified as residential — were listed as paying the lower residential rate.

  • $1.5M grant to pay for emergency communications upgrade

    HILLSVILLE — At their meeting last week, Carroll supervisors heard a clear signal that emergency communications will be improved with help from a $1.6 million regional grant.

    County officials had noted during budget discussions earlier this year that they were receiving good signals from the granting agency about funding to improve radio equipment in Carroll, Grayson and Galax, as well as Pulaski County.

    And Carroll County Administrator Gary Larrowe confirmed at the Monday meeting that the official award letter had indeed come in.

  • Smith to assist in Grayson

    INDEPENDENCE — After several months of interviews, the Grayson County Board of Supervisors named an assistant county administrator last Thursday.

    After a closed session regarding the hiring, County Administrator Bill Ring recommended the board hire Mitchell Lee Smith of the Fairview community.

    Ring said Smith was one of what he called an “extremely good pool of applicants.”

  • Grayson police arrest fugitives

    In a nationwide fugitive apprehension operation, led by the U.S. Marshal Service, members of the Grayson County Sheriff’s office — sworn in as federal agents — located and apprehended criminals wanted by local agencies for serious felonies.

    More than 239 agents in Western Virginia were sworn in as U.S. Marshals for the operation and more than 600 arrests were made.

    Grayson officers assisted with these arrests:

    John Williams of Fries was arrested for distribution of an imitation drug and possessing a firearm by a convicted felon.

  • Carroll plans to market I-77 land

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll officials want to see if there’s more interest in 91 acres of county-owned land than the only proposal so far — to build a 600-seat music venue and related developments.

    County supervisors and members of the Industrial Development Authority, in a joint meeting Thursday, agreed to seek assistance in marketing the land in question near the Interstate 77-U.S. 58 interchange, said Supervisors’ Chairman Sam Dickson.

  • Grayson restores pool schedule

    INDEPENDENCE — After complaints arose about Grayson County’s swimming pool being open fewer days this summer, supervisors announced last week the pool would be back on schedule immediately.

    Grayson County Board of Supervisors Chairman Mike Maynard announced during the board’s regular meeting June 12 that the pool was back on its regular schedule and would remain that way throughout the summer.
