  • Fourth Festivities

    GALAX

    The Galax Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor its annual 4th of July Celebration week of activities June 30 thru July 5.

    As always it will provide a family-friendly carnival atmosphere, once again featuring the Jules & Beck Amusement Company’s rides, shows and attractions.

    All special events in Felts Park next week include admission to the carnival. Other nights, admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children. Ride-all-night tickets are $15, except on July 4.

  • Local produce a healthier choice

    HILLSVILLE — Forward thinking farmers in Carroll County want to do what they can to avoid food scares, like the recent salmonella outbreak in tomatoes, by adopting better agricultural practices, a Virginia Cooperative Extension agent said.

    Health officials know that the source of the outbreak that sickened 167 in three months is not tomatoes from Virginia — almost all of them are still in the field, said Wythe Morris, an Extension agent specializing in horticulture.

  • Good news comes too late

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County had more money in its fund balance at the end of June 2007 than anyone expected — millions more, in fact, an auditor told the county supervisors at their June 23 meeting.

    Corbin Stone of Robinson Farmer Cox appeared before the county officials to talk them through what the audit report on fiscal year 2006-07 meant. The period in the audit covered a time before the current board members took office.

  • Carroll water projects flowing swiftly

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll Public Service Authority seems to have opened the floodgates on utility projects, getting a torrent of work ready to go, according to a recent informational meeting.

    PSA Chairman David Hutchins called the meeting in order to monitor the rising tide of projects, including extending water and sewer to three Interstate 77 exits to float more economic development in the county and a "self-help" effort in the works for Happy Hollow Road.

  • Boy leaps to safety, avoids collision

    A 9-year-old Galax boy sustained minor injuries as he jumped off a bicycle just before it was struck by a passing vehicle in the city on Monday.

    Galax Police Chief Rick Clark said Daniel Lee Lineberry was riding a bike when he went through a stop sign into the path of a vehicle at the intersection of Essex Street and Sixth Avenue.

    Lineberry apparently jumped from his bike when he realized it was about to be struck.

    He was transported by Grayson Emergency Medical Services ambulance and was treated and released at Twin County Regional Hospital.

  • Program eases transition to high school

    INDEPENDENCE — Rising freshman had the opportunity to attend a four-day camp at Grayson County High School to help transition them from middle to high school.

    Fourteen students attended the camp during the week of June 9 and participated in several activities to help with the transition, according to Camp Director Vicki Delp.

  • Grayson fiddlers' convention starts Friday

    ELK CREEK — Grayson County will hold its 41st Annual Old-Time and Bluegrass Fiddlers' Convention at Elk Creek School Ball Park starting today, Friday and continuing Saturday.

    The two-day event will feature $3,300 in cash prizes.

    Registration remains open for contestants until show time — set to begin at 5 p.m. tonight and 3 p.m. tomorrow.

    Admission to the convention will be $6 on Friday and $8 on Saturday, or a two-day pass is available for $12. Camping is also available for $5 per day.

  • Hillsville bids mayor a fond farewell

    HILLSVILLE — Mayor Randall Gravley presided over the final regular meeting of his two terms on Hillsville Town Council on Monday night.

    Gravley departed to a chorus of kind words from colleagues and fellow council members, who praised his leadership skills and involvement in the community.

    His term ends June 30. Bill Tate was elected to the mayor’s post this year, and takes office July 1.

    Gravley announced in February that he would not seek another term after eight years on council — four as a member and four as mayor.

  • Carroll supervisors split on tax rate

    HILLSVILLE — Two Carroll supervisors voted against the proposed fiscal year 2008-2009 tax rate of 59.5 cents Monday — not because they objected to the budget itself, but because of concerns about the recent property reassessment.

    Several motions were needed at the supervisors' special meeting Monday to officially adopt the budget, including approving the bottom-line $74.8 million, appropriating the funds and setting the tax rate.

  • Carroll family survives wreck

    KANSAS CITY, MO. — Several Kansas City media outlets are reporting that two Hillsville, Va., residents traveling with family avoided serious injury when a tractor-trailer plowed into their recreational vehicle and a police car on June 18.

    Bobby and Yvette Leonard of Hillsville were among the party traveling to Montana for a wedding, according to media reports.

    The RV hit a deer on Interstate 435, so the Leonard family pulled over onto the shoulder.
