  • Grayson unveils visitors' guide

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson took a step forward in trying to attract more tourism to the county by unveiling its 2008 Visitor’s Guide on July 14.

    Congressman Rick Boucher was on hand to unveil the guide. “We are here today to unveil a key milestone for Grayson County in the area of tourism.”

  • 'Praisin' In The Park' starts Sunday in Galax

    Area churches have joined together for a community-wide four-day Bible school called “Praisin’ In The Park,” for rising kindergarten through sixth grade students.

    The event starts Sunday and continues through July 31 from 6-8 p.m. each day in Felts Park in Galax.

    Robin Pack, organizer of the event and member of participating church Mount Vale United Methodist, has a vision to use an outreach program to get children involved in church, setting denominations and backgrounds aside to help people get to know the Lord.

  • Carroll theater's fate still unknown

    HILLSVILLE — Partners in the Mayberry Opry project have requested one last meeting with Carroll officials to see if the proposal to locate the music venue at Exit 14 off Interstate 77 could move forward.

    Weststar Investments and builder RGM Erectors already have land in Pulaski County near Exit 98 at Dublin where the 600-seat opry could go, but Mended Wings Productions representatives want to meet one more time with Carroll officials to see if anything can be worked out, Marshall Lineberry of Weststar Investments said Wednesday.

  • Some new water/sewer regulations frozen for now

    HILLSVILLE — Out of a number of water and sewer regulations before the Carroll Board of Supervisors July 14, the controversial ones got tabled after public hearings and the others were approved.

    The supervisors looked at updating the county’s floodplain ordinance, which has been in place since 1983, according to County Attorney Jim Cornwell, and six regulations for the Public Service Authority.

  • Funding requests go up in smoke

    Out of nearly $3.3 million in grant requests for local projects submitted to the Virginia Tobacco Commission, the VTC staff has only recommended $27,800 for one tourism partnership between localities in Virginia and North Carolina.

    The Blue Ridge Crossroad Economic Development Authority — a regional effort by Galax and Carroll and Grayson counties — had requested tobacco commission money for the regional tourism effort, a project referred to as the Blue Ridge Energy Research Center and a sewer treatment package plant at Exit 19 off Interstate 77 in Carroll.

  • Lane charged in fatal wreck

    HILLSVILLE — A 36-year-old Pulaski man, charged with reckless driving in a July 4 fatal crash on U.S. 221, now faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

    Virginia State Police Trooper R.B. Phipps appeared before a magistrate on Saturday to obtain the new charge against William Keith Lane, according to Carroll Commonwealth’s Attorney Greg Goad.

    Welcher Vaughn Dalton, 85, of Hillsville, was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., and he later died as the result of injuries he sustained in the accident.

  • Galax police to host community meeting on gangs

    Although no violence had been linked to gangs until a school-property incident this year, the Galax Police Department is heightening its efforts to confront gang-related activities in Galax and Carroll and Grayson counties.

    The police department will hold a town hall meeting at the Galax City Council Chambers, located on the second floor of the Galax Municipal Building, tomorrow, Thursday, at 7 p.m.

    Earlier this year, a 13-year-old Galax Middle School student faced charges after using an act of violence to recruit for an organized street gang, the Bloods.

  • Fancy Gap water grant denied

    HILLSVILLE — With the denial of a health department grant for Fancy Gap water, Carroll County officials and citizens wonder where the money to build a public system will come from.

    Learning of the rejection of the grant, Carroll Public Service Authority discussed at its July 14 the idea that there are still options to explore in the ongoing effort to develop land around Interstate 77’s Exit 8 and U.S. 52 to create growth.

  • Rabid fox attacks woman in Fries

    FRIES — After being attacked by a rabid gray fox, a family in Fries managed to kill the ferocious animal on their porch.

    According to Fries Police Chief Bobby Jones, a woman approached him outside his home in Fries last Thursday around 11:30 a.m.

    Jones said the woman had been cut badly and kept saying a raccoon had attacked her.

    The woman was on her way to Twin County Regional Hospital — where she was treated and received several stitches for her wounds — and asked Jones to go look for the animal.

  • Talk about new buses goes round n' round

    INDEPENDENCE — Despite asking for four new buses, the Grayson School system will only be allowed to purchase two — and maybe two more at the end of the year.

    Grayson Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Thomas asked the county board of supervisors to allow the school system to carry over $375,000 of more than half a million dollars left over after the school’s budget came out in the positive.
