  • Boards to work more closely on school projects

    HILLSVILLE — Probably the biggest question for Carroll School Board members during their organizational meeting on Jan. 3 was how to cooperate with the county supervisors to structure payments for phase III school construction work.
    After the regular Carroll County Board of Supervisors meeting on Jan. 9, they and the school board members came to a meeting of the minds — they will have a special joint meeting each month to discuss phase III construction matters.

  • Man dies in Cana wreck

    CANA — A single-vehicle accident on Jan. 10 in the Cana area led to the death of the driver, a 58-year-old Lambsburg man, according to a report from the Virginia State Police.
    The report identified the victim as Wendell R. Scrogham Jr.
    At about 8:30 p.m., the 1986 Jeep Comanche that Scrogham was driving westbound on Virginia 800 went off the road for about 100 feet on the grassy shoulder.
    The vehicle then went down the embankment into a depression, where it overturned.

  • Three seats up for election on city council

    Three Galax City Council seats are set to expire on June 30, and the filing period has begun for candidates seeking to run in the May 1 election.
    Terms for Robert Lazo, Sharon Plichta and Bill Webb will expire this year.
    All seats in Galax are at-large, meaning they don’t represent a specific district or precinct. Mayor and vice mayor are appointed by council from among the members.
    Council candidates do not run according to political party affiliation.
    City council seats are for four-year terms.

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County officials had a mixed reaction on what to do after the bankruptcy auction of the AmerLink lease and property took place on Jan. 5.

  • Fire destroys home on Cavalier Drive

    HILLSVILLE — Four fire departments and about 40 volunteers responded to a blaze at 1561 Cavalier Drive at about 6:40 p.m. on Jan. 6.
    Hillsville received assistance from Laurel Fork, Willis and Barren Springs fire departments to put out the double-wide home that belonged to Jennifer Frost, according to Hillsville Assistant Chief Mike Musser.
    The residents were out at the time the fire started. When they returned and circled around the house, they found fire and smoke coming from the rear of the structure.

  • Carroll native dies in Ohio fire

    An Ohio newspaper reports that Donald Ray Frazier, a Carroll County native, has died as the result of a Jan. 3 fire at his home in Mill Creek Township, Ohio.
    The 65-year-old Frazier leaves behind many family members in Hillsville and other communities in Southwest Virginia, according to an online obituary.
    Reports in the The Coshocton Tribune newspaper in Ohio say that the cause of the fire had not been determined as of Friday, though they noted that the blaze appeared to have originated near the home’s wood burning stove.
