  • UPDATED: N.C. murder suspect captured in Galax

    UPDATED: MAY 24, 10:20 A.M.

    A murder suspect arrested Wednesday in Galax is now charged with homicide in Wake County, N.C., in connection with the death of his wife.

    The Galax Police Department arrested Sonny Lee Howard, 42, of Raleigh, N.C., and charged him with being a fugitive from North Carolina.

  • Grayson budget balances without tax increase

    INDEPENDENCE – Grayson County has a nearly balanced budget and residents will see no tax increase again this year.
    Supervisors held a budget work session May 16. They started the budget process with a nearly $475,000 deficit between projected revenues and expenditures.
    Prior to the meeting, County Administrator Jonathan Sweet said he and his staff had managed to close that gap to approximately $130,000 through adjustments to the revenue side of about $90,000 and decreases on the expenditure side of nearly $250,000.

  • Firefighters not charged, but won't be reinstated

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll supervisor sought to reinstate two Laurel Fork Fire Department volunteers after a three-year suspension after an investigation that yielded no charges.
    The issues involved the purchase of a vehicle for the agency. Virginia State Police obtained a search warrant for the Laurel Fork Fire Department May 12, 2009, based on an allegation of rigging a bid for a vehicle, according to court records.

    HILLSVILLE ― Objections to Hillsville buying and preserving "the Bottle House" have clouded the issue, a member of the Fulcher family says.

    Members of the family that owns the unique landmark want to know if town officials have an interest, as they've not discussed the matter in an open meeting yet.

  • Old school turned over to Fries fire department

    INDEPENDENCE — Providence School is getting closer to becoming property of the Fries Volunteer Fire Department.
    All the speakers at a May 17 public hearing, held during the Grayson County Board of Supervisors meeting, spoke in favor of transferring the property.
    For the past three months, the fire department and board of supervisors have been working on an agreement to transfer the old Providence School property to the department.

    HILLSVILLE — Will the resignation of the Laurel Fork supervisor from Nehemiah Engineering satisfy Rural Development concerns about a conflict of interest on Fancy Gap water and sewer inspections?
    The Carroll County Public Service Authority decided in an early morning meeting last Thursday to send Rural Development’s Travis Jackson a letter to find out.

  • Tax rates could rise to balance Galax budget

    The City of Galax has proposed a increase to the meals tax as part of the $15.7 million budget for 2013.
    Raising the meals tax rate from 5¢ to 7.5¢ would maintain services and prevent Galax teachers from taking home less money in their paychecks next school year due to a 5 percent increase in contributions to the Virginia Retirement System.

  • Assistant administrator files harassment complaint against supervisor

     

    UPDATE - TUESDAY, MAY 22 — At the request of Nikki Shank, the protective order filed against Supervisor Bob Martin has been dismissed, according to court officials.

    Shank had already been in court in the morning when Judge E.M. Turner III recused himself from the hearing the matter.
