  • Wrangling over AmerLink incentive begins

    HILLSVILLE As Carroll County seeks $600,000 in state incentive funds it is owed back from log home company AmerLink, officials from granting authorities are watching the situation.

    The Virginia tobacco commission and the Governor's Opportunity Fund gave $300,000 each as incentives to attract the log home manufacturer to build a sawmill, spend $3 million on equipment and other improvements and create 200 jobs at the Carroll County Industrial Park.

  • Bank robber caught in Fries

    FRIES A Maryland man wanted in connection with a bank robbery in Mount Airy, N.C., was apprehended Wednesday in Fries by Grayson County deputies.

    Brian Keith Wise, 41, of Cumberland, Md. was wanted for questioning in connection with a bank robbery at Bank of America in Mount Airy around 12:30 on Wednesday.

    Grayson Sheriff Richard Vaughan said his office was asked to be on the lookout for a suspect and a vehicle believed to be heading towards Grayson.

  • Hillsville man killed in La. crash

    RUSTON, La. — Federal Express driver Anthony Sifford of Hillsville, Va., was killed in a collision of tractor-trailers Wednesday morning on Interstate 20 in Louisianna.

    Sifford, 41, died at the scene after the crash at 8:22 a.m. His passenger, Rodney Palmer of Martinsville, Va., died at 1 a.m. Thursday of severe burns at the Louisianna State University Medical Center in Shreveport.

  • Work to revive rescue squad continues

    HILLSVILLE — Past Hillsville Rescue Squad members will try to revive the agency by the end of the year.

    The efforts have support of the full Hillsville Town Council and Sulphur Springs District representative Frieda Jessup, who served as a squad volunteer before it was shut down about four years ago.

    At the town council meeting Sept. 8, Jessup reported as other former members Jeff Sexton and Robert Harrison watched from the audience that some preliminary work on resuscitating the rescue squad is in the works.

  • 'Market Village' to bring shops to Exit 14

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County officials expect that new shops at the Southwest Virginia Farmers' Market will bring visitors and an estimated $1 million in new capital investment to the county.

    Carroll supervisors and Industrial Development Authority members announced in a news release Monday that the shops known as the Market Village are coming to fruition after about four years in the planning phase.

  • Man found dead in New River

    FRIES — A North Carolina man spending the weekend in Grayson County was found dead late Saturday after apparently drowning in the New River.

    Elwood O. Montgomery, 63, of Mount Airy, N.C. was camping with his wife at Camp Dickenson near Fries.

    According to Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan, Elwood and his wife had just finished kayaking on the New River when his wife decided to head back to the campground to begin preparing dinner.

  • Independence considers power line placement

    INDEPENDENCE — Time is ticking away for the Town of Independence to decide where to place the upgraded power lines that will eventually serve a new prison being built outside town.

    At the regular town council meeting Sept. 9, Mayor Butch Reeves updated members on four options American Electric Power offered the town.

    Reeves said the first option was to run the lines underground along Davis Street — at the town’s expense.

  • Water to be part of subdivision considerations

    HILLSVILLE — Tasked with revising the county's subdivision ordinance proposal, Carroll's planning commission members may tap more into water availability issues.

    The planning commission and the Carroll supervisors held a joint public hearing on a subdivision ordinance proposal in August, during which 16 people spoke.

  • College to bring classes to Fries

    FRIES ee* A 20-year agreement appears to be in the works for the Town of Fries and Emory & Henry College to bring various programs to the small Grayson County community.

    E&H wants to use students and faculty to market the town, create an outreach program through its religion department and house a permanent outdoor program in Fries.

    The agreement is set to be signed on Oct. 2

  • Suspect charged in thefts

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll deputies have charged a 31-year-old Woodlawn man with stripping newly built homes of wiring and tools from construction sites in the western end of the county.

    Deputies got a warrant to search the Woodlawn home of Joshua Marlin Jones last Thursday, according to a news release from Sheriff Warren Manning. This led to seven counts of breaking and entering and seven counts of grand larceny being leveled against Jones.
