  • Funding flows for 52 water project

    HILLSVILLE — Funding is flooding in for a project to improve water service along U.S. 52 on the south side of Hillsville, including better pressure, larger lines and increased flow to aid in fire protection.

    One factor driving the improvement project is the U.S. 58 bypass under construction in Hillsville, which is expected to spur new construction on the south side of town. So, engineers with Anderson & Associates designed a project that will improve service now and answer future needs.

  • Nixon appeal request denied

    HILLSVILLE — After Virginia's Supreme Court denied a request to hear an appeal in Elva Rosemary Nixon's January 2006 convictions of second-degree murder, robbery and use of a firearm, she appears to have exhausted all opportunities in state courts to get the case overturned.

    In a week-long jury trial, Nixon was convicted in the ambush of Donald Brady, 75, on his farm in the Keno section of Carroll County.

    Brady died while he was being treated for gunshot wounds that he suffered during the attack.

  • High-speed network could be online soon

    Through a series of towers and equipment, nine out of 10 Carroll County schools, the Crossroads Institute in Galax and the Farmers’ Market in Hillsville are already connected to faster Internet speeds through the “Wired Road” regional broadband network, and the service will soon be provided to citizens.

    The Regional Industrial Facilities Authority, which works on industrial projects in the area, is coordinating the project.

  • Galax woman sentenced for drug conspiracy

    Irene Rodriguez Uribe of Galax was sentenced Sept. 23 in U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg to 87 months in prison for conspiring to distribute 500 grams of methamphetamine in Western Virginia and beyond.

    The prison term is to be followed by three years of supervision. She was ordered to pay a special assessment of $100.

  • Search turns up moonshine, pot in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE — A 49-year-old Carroll County man has been charged with possession of untaxed alcohol and marijuana after deputies searched his home Sept. 25.

    Sheriff Warren Manning identified the man as Milton Dale Coulson, who was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of untaxed alcohol.

    Investigators Fred Bobbitt and Venton Smith obtained a search warrant as part of an investigation into suspicious activities.

  • Grant building decision looms

    INDEPENDENCE After two community planning meetings in the Grant community of Grayson County, citizens asked the Grayson Board of Supervisors to allow the Goodwill Grange to maintain control of an old county-owned building.

    Earlier this year the supervisors put together a school facilities committee to hold meetings and discuss what to do with various properties around the county. The Grant building was first.

    Frieda Hutton serves on the committee and approached the supervisors with a recommendation at their Sept. 11 meeting.

  • Wrangling over AmerLink incentive begins

    HILLSVILLE As Carroll County seeks $600,000 in state incentive funds it is owed back from log home company AmerLink, officials from granting authorities are watching the situation.

    The Virginia tobacco commission and the Governor's Opportunity Fund gave $300,000 each as incentives to attract the log home manufacturer to build a sawmill, spend $3 million on equipment and other improvements and create 200 jobs at the Carroll County Industrial Park.

  • Bank robber caught in Fries

    FRIES A Maryland man wanted in connection with a bank robbery in Mount Airy, N.C., was apprehended Wednesday in Fries by Grayson County deputies.

    Brian Keith Wise, 41, of Cumberland, Md. was wanted for questioning in connection with a bank robbery at Bank of America in Mount Airy around 12:30 on Wednesday.

    Grayson Sheriff Richard Vaughan said his office was asked to be on the lookout for a suspect and a vehicle believed to be heading towards Grayson.

  • Hillsville man killed in La. crash

    RUSTON, La. — Federal Express driver Anthony Sifford of Hillsville, Va., was killed in a collision of tractor-trailers Wednesday morning on Interstate 20 in Louisianna.

    Sifford, 41, died at the scene after the crash at 8:22 a.m. His passenger, Rodney Palmer of Martinsville, Va., died at 1 a.m. Thursday of severe burns at the Louisianna State University Medical Center in Shreveport.

  • Work to revive rescue squad continues

    HILLSVILLE — Past Hillsville Rescue Squad members will try to revive the agency by the end of the year.

    The efforts have support of the full Hillsville Town Council and Sulphur Springs District representative Frieda Jessup, who served as a squad volunteer before it was shut down about four years ago.

    At the town council meeting Sept. 8, Jessup reported as other former members Jeff Sexton and Robert Harrison watched from the audience that some preliminary work on resuscitating the rescue squad is in the works.
