HILLSVILLE — Scores for math in the Virtual Academy of Virginia reflected a trend of lower-than-usual math results in the latest round of Standards of Learning testing.
Carroll County Public Schools helps with the online academy run by the private company K12.
The virtual school’s report card posted by the Virginia Department of Education shows that online students missed benchmarks in math and history scores.

INDEPENDENCE – Cuts in federal education from both the federal and state level once again loom over local educators as they begin the process of developing next year’s school budget.
Grayson Superintendent Kevin Chalfant provided the school board with a brief update on budget needs and priorities for the 2013-14 school year during the board’s regular meeting last week.

WOODLAWN — Carroll schools’ county-wide teacher of the year has taught at Woodlawn since beginning her career.
Becky Isom will also be the last teacher of the year to come from the school that’s scheduled to be closed after the completion of grade realignment, when construction work wraps up at Carroll high and intermediate.
Surprised in class by school and division administrators, Isom reacted that Woodlawn’s a good school full of good teachers.

HILLSVILLE — Busing middle school children from Cana to Hillsville would be similar to Carroll County sports teams riding to play away games in Franklin County, said one speaker at the second public hearing on the grade structure at St. Paul.
The difference is that Cana students would have to take the bus to Hillsville every day, not to the occasional away game, said Mark Beck, one of the 12 speakers who attended a Carroll County School Board public hearing on Nov. 13.
